HLV blasts Cedar Valley in short tilt

With the temperature near 100 degrees at kickoff, it turns out the cheerleaders from HLV may have been the hardest-working bunch Friday night at LaSalle Field.

Each time their team scored against woefully undermanned and over-matched Cedar Valley Christian, two of the girls did push-ups while the rest did jumping-jacks for each point on the scoreboard.

By the time the score reached 70-6 at halftime, they cut back to just one push-up or jumping-jack for every 10 points.

And it was then, too, that the home team Cedar Valley Huskies asked that the game be called.

Huskies win 'Wall/Found' spirit award

The Cedar Valley Christian football team will receive a "Just Drew It/Live Like Line" award for its sportsmanship, dignity and valor.

The award is named after former Cedar Rapids Kennedy golfer Drew Wall and former Iowa City West volleyball player Caroline Found. Wall lost his battle with cancer last November, and Found died in a moped accident two years ago.

The award is presented on behalf of the Wall and Found families.

Cedar Valley Christian lost all nine of its football games last season by lopsided margins, but the Huskies have continued to work hard and display good sportsmanship despite having a small, inexperienced team.

Undaunted Huskies eager for Year 3

The members of the Cedar Valley Christian football team say there's more to playing the game than wins and losses.

There are intangibles and rewards for working hard, even if the scores don't show it.

The Huskies lost all nine of their games last season by lopsided tallies. The average final score was 75-12, and all told they were outscored by a whopping margin of 678 to 110.

Coach Ed Betsworth knows those scores are pretty ugly. "They were horrible," he acknowledged.

The Huskies, undaunted, are back for their third year of IHSAA eight-man football, facing another uphill climb with smile on their faces.

"It's a lot of fun," said senior McKeon Silver. "Personally, I didn't care about the scores. I just enjoyed playing.

"I love our sportsmanship," he added. "Everyone is good sports. When we hit somebody, we help them back up. We're a family. I love that."

Another big loss for Huskies

If last week was the Cedar Valley Christian football team's best chance to get their first win ever, Friday was the next best chance.

The Huskies suffered a big loss at previous winless Central City last week but got another shot at a first win at home against the one-win Warriors of Central Elkader.

Despite playing at LaSalle Middle School, there was no home-field advantage for the Huskies.

The Warriors took control early and never looked back as they rushed their way past the Huskies, 82-14, in an 8-player District 4 game.

The Huskies (0-8, 0-6) helped Central (2-7, 2-6) right off the bat with a fumble in their own end zone that the Warriors’ Austin Kelly fell on for the first score. Central had yet to run an offensive play.

The rest of the quarter was all Warriors as they piled up 46 points on six touchdowns including another defensive score on an interception return.

The Huskies also muffed a kickoff return which the Warriors turned into points on the next play.

In all, the first half was one to forget as Cedar Valley Christian managed only one first down, was outgained 197 to 21, and trailed 62-0 at the break.

Cedar Valley Christian continued to show its resilience. The Huskies battled through the whole game as they have all year.

It took until the fourth quarter with just under 4 minutes remaining for the Huskies to find paydirt. Huskie quarterback Spencer Zielke tumbled in from three yards out to end the shutout.

Zielke later connected with Issac Egli on a long pass to get the Huskies into double digits for the fifth straight week.

Cedar Valley Christian wraps up its first full season next Friday at LaSalle against first-place Preston.

Huskies crushed in 'Basement Battle'

CENTRAL CITY - Cedar Valley Christian got walloped Friday night 70-16 by Central City to remain winless in the Huskies' still young life as a football program.

That is the bad news.

The good news?

Cedar Valley Christian Coach Ed Betsworth has a plan, a six-year plan to be exact. This is Year 2, and Betsworth said he has seen positive steps made.

“I told them when I got here that I had a six-year plan and in six years we would be in the Dome holding the trophy,” Betsworth said. “It’s a process and we believe in the process.”

The Huskies' plan is helped by the fact that they have a terrific group of kids. They aren’t the fastest, biggest, or most skilled players but they don’t give up and they showed that again Friday night.

“We have a special group of kids,” Betsworth said. “We know we aren’t as big or experienced as other teams but we are having fun and that is what is important.”

After trailing 64-0 at halftime, the Huskies could have rolled over and quit. Not this group. The Huskies came out with the same energy and fight as a team in a tie game.

“We are getting our heads handed to us but we don’t quit,” Betsworth said. “The kids go out and play hard.”

Both teams came into the game with 0-6 overall records and 0-5 marks in 8-Player District 4, making this a battle to stay out of the district's basement.

Cedar Valley Christian outscored Central City 16-6 in the second half. It may not have been against the Wildcats' best, but regardless of who is out there it takes a lot of heart to come give it your all in the second half after getting it handed to you for seven straight weeks.

The Huskies showed some defense early when they stood up the Wildcats on a fourth and short on the first possession of the game.

After the initial stop the Wildcat offense went wild. Central City scored six straight touchdowns en route to a 48-point first quarter.

Cedar Valley Christian couldn’t get things going on offense in the first half, turning the ball over five times and managing only 33 yards.

The Huskies battled to the end in the second half, getting a touchdown pass from Spencer Zielke to Issac Egil with just over a minute left to play.

Cedar Valley Christian got their first points on a long pass from Zielke to Eric Gustafson in the third quarter. Zielke missed some of the game with a nagging heel injury and leading rusher and back-up quarterback Daniel Ostroot left the game in the second half with a knee injury.

The Huskies host Elkader Central next Friday at LaSalle Middle School.
