Wagemester ejected, but Eagles roll anyway

Kirkwood Coach Doug Wagemester began Thanksgiving vacation a little earlier than planned Tuesday night when he was ejected from his team's game against Black Hawk College.

The Eagles enjoyed a basketball feast without him.

J.C. Fuller led a balanced attack with 17 points as Kirkwood dunked Black Hawk, 88-63, at Johnson Hall.

Douglas sparks Kirkwood by Dakota County

Devan Douglas had a big game for the Kirkwood Eagles Saturday as they whipped Dakota County Technical College, 76-52, at Johnson Hall.

Douglas, a 6-foot-2 sophomore from Clinton, collected 22 points, 10 rebounds, 6 assists and 4 steals. He hit two 3-pointers.

Gage Heffernan scored 16 points for Kirkwood (4-3), Kevin Hunter added 12 points and J.C. Fuller had 10.

Nicholas Sabtke led Dakota County with 13 points.

Hard-working Heffernan leads Eagles

Gage Heffernan admits that he isn’t the guy who is going to jump out of the gym, or drain a barrage of 3-pointers.

But what he might lack in those offensive qualities, he makes up for in hustle.

Heffernan willed his way to 17 points and 14 rebounds on Friday night, helping his Kirkwood Eagles blow past Elgin, 88-51, at Johnson Hall.

Young skipped Mount Zion to join Kirkwood

Najeal Young had a chance to play basketball at one of the most famous prep schools in the country this year, but he declined an offer from Mount Zion Christian Academy to play for Kirkwood.

That's turned out to be good news for Coach Doug Wagemester and the Eagles.

Young made 10 of 11 shots and scored 22 points Tuesday night as Kirkwood rolled by the Grand View junior varsity, 81-56, in the home opener at Johnson Hall.

Kirkwood nudged by Marshalltown, 73-70

MARSHALLTOWN -- Marshalltown built a three-point lead by halftime and held on to deal Kirkwood a 73-70 loss Friday night in men's junior college basketball.

The loss was the third straight for Kirkwood (1-3). Najeal Young led the Eagles with 16 points and Devan Douglas added 14.

Marshalltown (4-0) had four players score in double figures, led by Jamal Gatali's 15.

Kirkwood made one more field goal and three more free throws than Marshalltown, but the Tigers knocked down 10 3-pointers to just two for the Eagles, who were a combined 2-of-11 from beyond the arc.
