Eagles, Mustangs battling for golf title

The powerful men's golf teams from Kirkwood and Mount Mercy are battling for top honors at the Cropper Golf Classic at Hunters Ridge.

Kirkwood owns the 18-hole lead at 295 after Saturday's competition, with Mount Mercy right behind at 300. The final round is scheduled for Sunday.

Bennett Laxton of Viterbo grabbed the first-day lead with a 2-under-par 70.

Jamie Booth led Mount Mercy with a 1-under 71, but he's playing for the Mount Mercy gold team and not with the group that's battling for the team title. Eddie Doyle and Mitch Williams topped Kirkwood at 1-over 73.

Kirkwood - Mens Golf

Kirkwood golfers take NIACC title

MASON CITY - Dan Cutkomp and Jordan Even both fired 1-under-par 71's Thursday to help the Kirkwood Eagles claim top honors at the NIACC Invitational at the Mason City Country Club.

Kirkwood finished at 288 for an eight-shot victory over Iowa Central.

Logan Yates of Iowa Central took medalist honors with a 2-under 70. Cutkomp and Even tied for second place with Jackson Purdy of Iowa Central.

Kirkwood had a strong overall performance with Mitch Willems at even-par 72, Carson Whittington at 73, Eddie Doyle at 73 and Louis Flynn at 75.

Kirkwood men finish 6th at nationals

SCOTTSBORO, Ala. – The Kirkwood men’s golf team finished in sixth place with 1,171 strokes in the NJCAA Division II national tournament Friday.

South Mountain Community College of Arizona won the tournament with 1,122 strokes, 30-under par in the 72-hole tournament.

The Eagles shot 296 strokes in Friday’s final round and finished 19-over par for the tournament. Carson Whittington fired a 70 on Friday for a 290 total and finished tied for 27th overall.

Kirkwood - Mens Golf

Kirkwood remains 6th at nationals

SCOTTSBORO, Ala. - The Kirkwood men's golf team maintained its sixth-place position at the NJCAA Division II national tournament Thursday after 54 holes of the 72-hole tournament.

Carson Whittingham led the Eagles Thursday with a 1-under-par 71 at the Goose Pond Colony Lake Course in Alabama. No other Eagle player broke par.

South Mountain Community College of Arizona leads the 72-hole tournament with a 36-hole score of 841, which is 23 under par. Kirkwood is in sixth place at 11-over 875.

Phillip Hickam of Mississippi Gulf Coast leads the tournament at 11-under 205. Dan Cutkomp and Blaine Buhr are both at 2-over, 218 tied for 32nd place.

The tournament concludes Friday.

KIRKWOOD: Dan Cutkomp 72-68-78=218, Blaine Buhr 73-69-76=218, Carson Whittington 75-74-71=220, Eddie Doyle 73-73-75=221, Dylan Daxon 76-74-76=226.

Eagles climb to 6th at NJCAA golf

SCOTTSBORO, Ala. - The Kirkwood men's golf team enjoyed a hot round at the NJCAA Division II national tournament Wednesday and climbed to sixth in the team standings after 36 holes of the 72-hole tournament.

Dan Cutkomp led the Eagles Wednesday with a 4-under-par 68 at the Goose Pond Colony Lake Course in Alabama. Blaine Buhr followed with a 3-under 69, Eddie Doyle posted a 73, Carson Whittington carded a 74 and Dylan Daxon also had a 74.

South Mountain Community College of Arizona leads the 72-hole tournament with a 36-hole score of 553, which is 23 under par. Kirkwood is in sixth place at 1-over 577.

Phillip Hickam of Mississippi Gulf Coast leads the tournament at 11-under 133. Cutkomp is tied for ninth in the individual standings at 4-under 140.

The tournament continues Thursday and Friday.

KIRKWOOD: Dan Cutkomp 72-68=140, Blaine Buhr 73-69=142, Eddie Doyle 73-73=146, Carson Whittington 75-74=149, Dylan Daxon 76-74=150.
