KCC golfers have good start at nationals

FOLEY, Ala. - The Kirkwood men's golf team enjoyed a good start at the NJCAA Division II national tournament Monday and is tied for fourth place after 18 holes.

Tyler Junior College has the lead at 289, with Kirkwood five shots off the pace at 294. The Eagles are tied with Meridian Community College.

Max Thrune and Dawson Peters of Kirkwood fired rounds of 1-over-par 73 and are three shots behind the leader. JD Goodfellow and Ryan Morrison posted rounds of 2-over 74 and Niall Powell fashioned a 3-over 75.

The 72-hole tournament continues through Thursday, with 18 holes each day.

Powell named regional Golfer of Year

Niall Powell of Kirkwood has been named the NJCAA DII regional Golfer of the Year for Region XI.

Powell, a sophomore, won two regular-season tournaments and placed in the top-5 at eight events.

Kirkwood Coach Darin Pint was named the regional Coach of the Year for leading the Eagles to their fourth straight regional title and a berth in the national tournament next week.

Dawson Peters and Max Thrune of Kirkwood were named first team all-region. Powell and JD Goodfellow were named second team all-region, based on their finishes at the regional tournament this spring. Ryan Morrison of Kirkwood received honorable mention.

Sevcik commits to Saint Ambrose golf

Kirkwood sophomore Jake Sevcik plans to continue his college golf career at Saint Ambrose University in Davenport, he announced Thursday.

Sevcik, a Linn-Mar grad, carries a 77.76 scoring average for the Eagles.

The Kirkwood golf program has qualified for the NJCAA Division II national tournament in Alabama  on May 22-25.

Kirkwood golfers capture Region XI title

PANORA - Freshman Dawson Peters fired a final round 73 to capture the individual championship, leading the Kirkwood golf team to the Region XI title on Sunday at the Lake Panorama National Resort course.

Peters finished with a two-day total of 147, one shot ahead of Southwestern's Oliver Pearson and two shots better than Eagle teammate Max Thrune.

The Eagles, who trailed by one shot after the first day, finished at 601 as a team, well ahead of DMACC (612) and NIACC (624). All three teams qualify for the NJCAA national tournament, May 22-25 at Glenlakes Golf Club in Foley, Ala.

Kirkwood golfers eye regional title

PANORA - The Kirkwood men's golf team is locked in a tight battle with DMACC for top honors at the NJCAA Region XI Championship at the Lake Panorama National Resort.

DMACC holds the first-round lead with a team score of 299 Saturday, with Kirkwood just one shot behind in second place at 300.

The final round is Sunday. The top three teams advance to the national tournament.

JD Goodfellow, Dawson Peters and Max Thrune of Kirkwood fired rounds of 2-over-par 74 and are tied for second place in the individual standings with five other golfers. Reinhardt Saunderson of Southwestern Community College has a four-shot lead at 2-under 70.
