Hobbs nets 28 as Coe tops Cornell

Aleena Hobbs is one of those rare college basketball players who can play just about any position on the floor and do it well.

She proved it Tuesday night.

Hobbs spent most of her time at power forward Tuesday and finished with a double-double as Coe topped Cornell, 70-59, at Eby Fieldhouse to give Nate Oakland a victory in his first game as head coach.

Hobbs, a 5-foot-10 sophomore from Cedar Rapids Washington, scored a career-best 28 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to help the Kohawks begin their season on a positive note.

Hobbs is also an effective player in the backcourt or on the wings, but the Kohawks needed her close to the basket against the Rams. She made 10 of 13 shots from the field, hit 7 of 10 free throws, dished out two assists, collected one steal and nailed her only 3-pointer.

"She's just so versatile," Oakland said. "She's able to do a lot of things on the interior and on the perimeter. You just have to pick your poison with her."

Hobbs averaged better than 13 points for Coe last year as a freshman. She more than doubled that in her first game as a sophomore.

Oakland feels at home with Kohawks

Nate Oakland never had his own office when he served as an assistant coach with the Coe women's basketball team during the 2010 and 2011 campaigns, but now he's got his own digs with his name on the door.

Oakland, 35, was named Coe's new head coach in May and arrived on the job in June. He succeeded Randi Henderson, his former boss here who left after last season to become an assistant coach at North Carolina-Charlotte.

Oakland commuted from Cedar Falls to Cedar Rapids during his two years as an assistant coach with the Kohawks and shared office space at Eby Fieldhouse. Now he's in the big chair and loving it.

"It's been good," he said Wednesday morning. "It helps knowing your way around and knowing everybody down here. And knowing the league helps a lot."

Oakland was a year behind Henderson when they both attended Cedar Falls High School, where Henderson (then Randi Petersen) was a star basketball player and swimmer. Oakland's wife, Alex, was on the Cedar Falls swim team with Henderson.

Jade Rogers will coach at Coe

Jade Rogers, a former all-state basketball player at Kennedy, will serve as an assistant coach with the Coe women's basketball team this season.

Rogers, 23, was a four-time all-state selection at Kennedy.

Rogers attended the University of Iowa for four years, played basketball for the Hawkeyes and got her degree from Iowa. She moved to St. Louis last August to coach at Maryville University, but switched from being a coach to a player after she learned she still had a year of eligibility.

Oakland returns to Coe as head coach

Coe College Director of Athletics John Chandler has announced the hiring of Nate Oakland as the new head coach of the Kohawk women’s basketball program.

Oakland, a former assistant coach at Coe, returns to Cedar Rapids after spending the past four years as an assistant at Wartburg College.

Oakland’s day-to-day duties at Wartburg included recruiting, scouting, individual  instruction and film editing. The Knights led the nation in 3-point shooting percentage at 38.8 during the 2011-12 season.

During his time at Wartburg, Oakland also served as the head coach for the men’s golf team for three years.

Prior to working at Wartburg, Oakland spent two years on the staff at Coe College under Randi (Peterson) Henderson. During his two years, the Kohawks shared the Iowa Conference regular season championship in 2010 and 2011.
