Sommer twins lift Wartburg past Coe

WAVERLY - Linn-Mar graduates Kristie and Katie Sommer scored 10 points apiece to lead Wartburg to a 60-54 win over Coe in Iowa Conference women's basketball action on Wednesday night at Buzz Levick Arena.

The Knights (13-7, 4-5 IIAC) built a 30-20 halftime lead and held off a late charge to avenge an earlier loss to the Kohawks in Cedar Rapids. Kailey Kladivo led Wartburg with 12 points. The Sommer twins each hit a pair of 3-point baskets for Wartburg.

Coe (13-7, 6-3) dropped into a three-way tie for second place in the league with Loras and Luther, two games behind Dubuque. Prairie graduate Courteney McCrary led the Kohawks with 13 points and seven rebounds. Megan Hayes finished with 11 points.

Coe - Women's Basketball

Coe women down Luther, 73-62

Megan Hayes had 18 points and nine rebounds as the Coe College women’s basketball team beat Luther, 73-62, Saturday at Eby Fieldhouse.

Allie Wirth scored 13 points and also grabbed nine rebounds for Coe (13-6 overall and 5-2 in the IIAC). Courteney McCrary added eight points.

The Kohawks are in second place in the Iowa Conference standings, one game behind Dubuque.

Moran Lonning scored 19 points for Luther (15-4, 5-3) and Kylie Romeo had 15 points.

Coe - Women's Basketball

Spartans top Coe, take over IIAC lead

Dubuque forced Coe into 20 turnovers and held sharp-shooting guard Mickey Hansche to just two points in a 77-72 win Wednesday night at Eby Fieldhouse to take over sole possession of first place in the Iowa Conference.

The visiting Spartans (12-6, 6-1) were led by Jenna Kotas with 16 points.

Coe (12-6, 5-2) was paced by Prairie graduate Courteney McCrary with 16 points. Former Washington standout Aleena Hobbs added 15 while Jenna Lehman chipped in with 13.

DUBUQUE (77): Meyer 1 1-2 3, Schmidt 7 0-0 14, Richardson 1 0-0 3, Collier 2 2-3 6, Goetz 2 3-3 7, Brinker 6 1-2 13, Kirkwood 0 0-0 0, Kotas 5 4-4 16, Snitker 1 2-2 4, Springer 1 7-7 10. Totals 26 21-24 77.

Hansche sinks 8 treys in Coe win

PELLA – Mickey Hansche had eight 3-point goals for 24 points to lead the Coe College women’s basketball team in a 62-52 win over Central College on Saturday at Kuyper Gym.

Hansche was 8-of-14 from 3-point range to tie her own school record for 3-pointers in a game.

Megan Hayes had two blocked shots for the Kohawks to break the school record for career blocks at 150.

Aleena Hobbs had 16 points and nine rebounds for Coe (12-5, 5-1). Courteney McCrary added 10 points and eight rebounds.

Coe - Women's Basketball

Coe women climb into tie for 1st

The Coe women's basketball team rallied from a 10-point halftime deficit and trimmed Wartburg, 61-59, in an Iowa Conference game at Eby Fieldhouse Wednesday night.

The victory lifted the Kohawks into a three-way tie for first place in the conference with Luther and Dubuque, all with 4-1 records. Luther suffered its first Iowa Conference loss Wednesday to Simpson.

Senior Megan Hayes scored 16 points for Coe and became the eighth player in school history with 1,000 career points. She now has 1,011 for her career.

Aleena Hobbs hit a 3-pointer to give the Kohawks a 58-56 lead with 2:21 remaining, then Mickey Hansche hit another triple to give Coe a 61-56 edge with 1:08 left to play.
