Coe duo named to All-IIAC team

Coe junior Mickey Hansche and junior Aleena Hobbs have been named to the the first-team all-Iowa Conference team, announced on Wednesday.

The Kohawk duo led the team to a 15-12 record, losing in the IIAC tournament semifinals to Loras.

Former Linn-Mar guard Katie Sommer was a second-team selection, playing for Wartburg.

Coe's Jenna Lehman was an honorable mention selection.

Luther senior Moran Lonning was named the league's Most Valuable Player. Lori Obendorf of Loras was the defensive player of the year while Duhawk Coach Hustin Heinzen was named coach of the year.

Coe women nipped by Loras, 69-68

DUBUQUE – The Coe women’s basketball team rallied from a 54-47 deficit but fell a point short against Loras, 69-68, in the semifinals of the Iowa Conference Tournament on Thursday at Lillis Court.

Jenna Lehman scored 19 points for the Kohawks and Jordan Holmes scored 12 points. Mickey Hansche added 11 points to become the third player in school history to score 400 points in a season.

No. 2 seed Loras (18-8) out-rebounded No. 6 seed, Coe 32-18.

Kaitlin Phillips led the Duhawks with 18 points.

Coe finished the season with a 15-12 record.

COE (68): Lehman 8 0-0 19, Hansche 4 0-0 11, Hobbs 2 5-5 9, Wirth 3 0-0 7, Stulken 3 0-0 6, Holmes 5 0-0 12, Lehmann 2 0-3 4, McCrary 0 0-0 0, Boltz 0 0-0 0. Totals 27 5-8 68.

LORAS (69): Phillips 7 4-5 18, Cabrera 6 2-2 14, Obendorf 6 0-2 12, McMahon 4 1-2 9, Jones 1 0-0 3, Stanich 5 0-0 11, Stokes 1 0-0 2, Chapman 0 0-0 0, Weaver 0 0-0 0. Totals 30 7-11 69.

Coe women upset Wartburg in tourney

WAVERLY – Jenna Lehman scored 16 points and Allie Wirth added 11 as the sixth-seeded Coe women’s basketball team upset No. 3 seeded Wartburg, 66-60, in the first round of the Iowa Conference Tournament on Tuesday at Wartburg.

The Kohawks (15-11) will face No. 2 seed Loras (17-8) in the semifinals Thursday at Loras.

Aleena Hobbs scored nine points for Coe. Mickey Hansche and Ashley Stulken both had eight points. Hansche’s two 3-point goals gave her 81 for the season, breaking her own school mark set last year.

The 15 wins for coach Nate Oakland are the most ever for a first-year coach at Coe.

Hobbs, Hansche power Coe women

Aleena Hobbs scored 20 points and Mickey Hansche passed the 1,000-point mark with 19 points as the Coe women’s basketball team topped Buena Vista 92-78 to complete the regular season Saturday at Eb Fieldhouse.

Jenna Lehman had 15 points and five assists for the Kohawks (14-11, 5-9 IIAC), Courteney McCrary had 14 points, Allie Wirth added 10 points, and Ashley Stulken had a career-high nine blocks.

Hansche was 5-of-5 from 3-point range to become the ninth player in school history to break the 1,000-point mark in her career.

Hobbs also broke assistant coach Kayla Waskow’s single-season school record of 445 points.

Jasmyn Flynn-Graves scored 19 points to lead Buena Vista (14-11, 8-6).

Coe earned the No. 6 seed in the Iowa Conference Tournament. Coe will face No. 3 Wartburg at 7 p.m. Tuesday in Waverly.

Coe women set record in loss

The Coe women's basketball team broke the school record for most 3-pointers in a single season Wednesday, but it did not help the Kohawks win a ballgame.

Coe lost to Luther, 74-60, in an Iowa Conference game at Eby Fieldhouse.

The Kohawks made seven 3-pointers, giving them 215 triples this season.

Mickey Hansche scored 14 points for Coe (13-11, 4-9). Aleena Hobbs had a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Allie Wirth also scored 10 points for the Kohawks.

Anna Madrigal and Moran Lonning tossed in 18 points apiece for Luther (19-5, 11-2).
