Mustangs suffer 2 tough losses

The Mount Mercy baseball team dropped a pair of one-run games to William Penn Saturday in a Midwest Collegiate Conference doubleheader at the Xavier High School field.

William Penn won the first game, 2-1, in 11 innings. The Statesmen took the nightcap, 4-3.

Mount Mercy wasted strong pitching performances in both games. Austin Czerwiec pitched 10 innings and allowed only one run in the opener. Ryan Flaherty tossed seven innings in relief in the second game and allowed only one unearned run.

Czerwiec tosses 2-hitter for Mustangs

Austin Czerwiec pitched a two-hitter Thursday as Mount Mercy trimmed AIB, 3-1, in the first game of a Midwest Collegiate Conference doubleheader at Ken Charipar Field.

AIB won the nightcap, 7-4.

Czerwiec was touched for a single in the fifth inning and another single in the sixth inning, the only hits off him all day. AIB scored its only run in the fourth inning with two walks, a sacrifice bunt and an infield grounder.

Mount Mercy took a 1-0 lead in the opener on an RBI single by Cody Bell in the first inning. The Mustangs made it 3-0 in the third inning on a two-run double by Patrick Haney. Bell and Cody Williams had two hits in the game.

Mustangs reach .500 mark with sweep

CLINTON - The Mount Mercy Mustangs got strong outings from Austin Czerwiec and Cale Henke Saturday and swept a non-conference doubleheader from Ashford, 4-2 and 6-1, at the Ashford University Field in Clinton.

The sweep lifted Mount Mercy to 11-11 for the campaign.

Czerwiec (4-1) allowed only one earned run in six innings in the first game. He struck out eight batters, walked one and allowed just four hits.

Henke (3-2) tossed 6.2 innings in the nightcap before getting last-out relief from Michael Hackett. Henke was nicked for one unearned run and allowed only three hits. He struck out six batters and walked two.

Hayden needs Tommy John Surgery

Mount Mercy pitcher Alex Hayden has been diagnosed with a torn UCL in his right arm and is scheduled for Tommy John Surgery April 10.

Hayden was injured during a routine bullpen session in late February. An MRI revealed the torn UCL. The doctor who works with the Minnesota Twins and University of Minnesota will perform the operation in Minneapolis.

Hayden compiled a 1-0 record and 2.45 ERA in two starts for the Mustangs this season. He also hit .250 as a second baseman.

Hayden starred at Cedar Rapids Kennedy and Iowa Central Community College before enrolling at Mount Mercy last summer as a junior.

Mount Mercy baseball splits twinbill

DES MOINES - Cody Williams went 3-for-3 in the leadoff spot Saturday as Mount Mercy trimmed Grand View, 5-3, in the second game of a Midwest Collegiate Conference doubleheader in Des Moines.

Grand View won the first game, 6-2.

Devin Holmes and Patrick Haney had two hits for the Mustangs in their victory. Holmes and Jimmy Lizarraga drove in two runs. Evan Boddicker pitched six innings for the victory.

Williams had two hits for Mount Mercy in the first game, making him 5-for-6 in the doubleheader. Lizarraga also had two hits.
