Mustangs lose 27-0, but gain split

DES MOINES - The Mount Mercy baseball team was outscored 29-3 Friday, but the Mustangs managed to split their Midwest Collegiate Conference doubleheader with Grand View.

Mount Mercy won the first game, 3-2 in eight innings, on a game-winning single by Jimmy Lizarraga and a strong pitching performance by Cale Henke.

Grand View crushed Mount Mercy in the second game, 27-0.

Austin Czerwiec began the top of the eighth inning of the first game with a double for the Mustangs and was replaced by pinch-runner Ben Larson. Larson advanced to third base on a fly ball by Cody Bell and scored on Lizarraga's single to left field.

Henke allowed a two-out single in the bottom of the eighth inning, then ended the game with his 11th strikeout. Henke (2-2) allowed eight hits and walked only one batter.

Mount Mercy splits with Midland

MIDLAND, Neb. - The Mount Mercy baseball split a doubleheader with Midland on Sunday.

Austin Czerwiez went 3-for-4 as the Mustangs won the opener, 6-5. Cody Williams had two doubles and scored two runs. Jimmy Lizarraga had two RBIs.

Midland took the second game, 15-2. JanKarlos Badillo had two hits for the Mustangs. Cale Henke hit a home run and drove in two runs.

The split left Mount Mercy with a 7-9 record. Midland is 10-14.

Czerwiec stars for Mount Mercy baseball

FREMONT, Neb. - Austin Czerwiec belted a three-run homer and was the winning pitcher Saturday as the Mount Mercy Mustangs defeated Midland (Neb.), 8-6, in the second game of an NAIA baseball doubleheader.

Midland took the first game, 3-2.

Czerwiec hit his three-run homer in the fourth inning to give the Mustangs a 6-4 lead. Cody Bell, Ricardo Baida and Casey Dahm had two hits for Mount Mercy in the game. Dahm drove in two runs and Cody Williams scored two runs.

Patrick Haney had two hits for Mount Mercy in the 3-2 loss. Cale Henke allowed three runs in six innings and was the hard-luck loser for the Mustangs.

The split left Mount Mercy with a 6-8 record. Midland stands at 9-13.

Mount Mercy splits with Graceland

STERLING, Kan. - Mount Mercy scored twice in the top of the seventh inning Sunday to snap a 2-2 tie and defeat Graceland, 4-2, in the second game of a doubleheader in Sterling, Kan.

Graceland won the first game, 11-3.

Cody Williams scored two runs for the Mustangs in the victory. Devin Holmes, Cody Bell and Jimmy Lizarraga had RBIs. Evan Boddicker pitched the first 4 1/3 innings and allowed only one run. Brett Malsam pitched the final 1 2/3 innings in relief and got the victory.

Holmes had two hits for Mount Mercy in the first game. The split left the Mustangs with a 5-7 record.

Mount Mercy baseball gets split

STERLING, Kan. - Christian Knox belted a two-run homer in the seventh inning Saturday to help Mount Mercy clip Sterling, 3-1, in a well-pitched college baseball game.

Austin Czerwiec tossed a complete game for the Mustangs but was on the short end of a 1-0 score going into the seventh and final inning. The Mustangs scored three times in the top of the seventh and Czerwiez finished the job on the mound in the bottom of the seventh.

Mount Mercy lost to Graceland, 8-4, in its first game Saturday in Kansas. Czerwiec, Cody Bell and Jimmy Lizarraga all had two hits for the Mustangs. Bell drove in two runs.

The split left the Mustangs with a 4-6 record.
