Mustangs rained out in Purgatory

NOBLESVILLE, Ind. - The second round of the Purgatory Intercollegiate golf tournament was rained out Saturday, shrinking the event to the 18 holes that were played Friday.

William Bruyeres of Mount Mercy fired a 1-under-par 71 Friday and tied for eighth place, four shots behind the leaders.

Natalea Cook of Mount Mercy shot a 4-over 76 Friday and tied for eighth place in the women's standings.

Bruyeres leads Mustangs at Purgatory Invite

NOBLESVILLE, Ind. - William Bruyeres of Mount Mercy fired a  1-under-par 71 Friday at the Purgatory Intercollegiate golf tournament  and is tied for eighth place heading into the final round Saturday.

Bruyeres is four shots behind the co-leaders after 18 holes.

Natalea Cook of Mount Mercy shot a 4-over 76 and is tied for eighth  place in the women's standings. The Mount Mercy women are in fourth  place in the team standings and the Mount Mercy men are in ninth place.

No. 1 Eagles roll at national tourney

DANVILLE, Ill. - The Kirkwood Eagles looked like the No. 1 team in the  country Tuesday afternoon.

The top-ranked Eagles built a 21-point lead in the first half and  thrashed North Central Missouri, 96-66, in the first round of the  NJCAA Division II national tournament at the Mary Miller Center.

Kirkwood (28-4) will face Niagara County (N.Y.), a 73-61 winner over Wake Tech (N.C.), in the quarterfinals Wednesday at 6 p.m.

Allante Pickens popped in five 3-pointers in the first half and had 17  points by intermission, with the Eagles sitting on a 53-32 lead at  that point. He finished with six triples and 24 markers. Pickens shot  9-for-10 overall from the field and 6-for-7 on 3-pointers.

Doug Wilson and Devonte Thedford scored 13 points apiece for Kirkwood.  Jamal Stephenson netted 12 points off the bench and Connor Kasperbauer  contributed 10 points. Wilson had 10 rebounds.

"I thought we played pretty well," said Kirkwood Coach Bryan Petersen.  "For spurts, we really executed defensively. And offensively we made  some shots."

Noble, Mustangs claim titles at Bent Tree

COUNCIL BLUFFS - Casey Noble of Mount Mercy captured medalist honors at the Iowa Western Invitational Tuesday and led the Mustangs to the team championship at the Bent Tree Golf Club in Council Bluffs.

Noble fired rounds of 78 and 75 for a 36-hole total of 153, good for a one-stroke victory over Lisa Lied of Iowa Western and Karli Kerrigan of Grand View.

Noble finished at 9-over par for the tournament.

Mount Mercy trailed by one shot heading into the final round, but the Mustangs sizzled with a 303 Tuesday and won the tournament by 35 shots over Iowa Western, 634 to 669.

Allyson Wertz of Mount Mercy fired a 1-over 73 Tuesday and finished in fifth place. Natalea Cook placed sixth for the Mustangs and Kayla Stammer tied for seventh.

Noble paces Mount Mercy women

COUNCIL BLUFFS - Casey Noble of Mount Mercy shot a 6-over-par 78  Monday and sits in third place at the Iowa Western Invitational at the  Bent Tree Golf Course in Council Bluffs heading into the final round  Tuesday.

Emily Spies of Iowa Western fired a 3-over 75 and leads the tournament  after 18 holes, with Noble three shots behind in third place.

Iowa Western has a slim one-shot lead over Mount Mercy, 330 to 331,  heading into the final round.
