Menster helps Mustangs sweep into 1st place

OSKALOOSA - Tawny Menster won one game with her arm Tuesday and helped  win another game with her bat.

Her exploits helped the Mount Mercy softball team sweep William Penn,  3-0 and 5-3, and move into a tie for first place in the North Division  of the Heart of America Conference.

Menster (5-0) pitched a three-hit shutout in the 3-0 victory in Game 1  with five strikeouts and no walks. She belted a three-run homer in the  5-3 victory in Game 2 to give the Mustangs the lead in the fifth inning.

The sweep lifted Mount Mercy to 13-7 overall and 6-2 in the  conference. The Mustangs are tied with Grand View for first place in  the North Division of the Heart of America.

Payton Bruner, Emily Oler and Sydney Robertson had two hits in the  opener. Oler belted a home run and drove in two runs.

Menster's slam lifts Mount Mercy

Tawny Menster belted a grand slam in the bottom of the seventh inning Sunday to snap a 5-5 tie and give the Mount Mercy softball team a 9-5 victory over Culver-Stockton in the first game of their Heart of America Conference doubleheader at Busse Field.

Culver-Stockton won the second game, 9-4.

Mount Mercy trailed 5-4 heading into the bottom of the seventh inning of the opener. They tied the game, 5-5, then Menster delivered her walk-off homer with the bases loaded.

Menster was 2-for-4 in the ballgame and scored twice. Jessica Miller, Jess Heick and Morgan Braughton also had two hits. Jolona Shield drove in two runs. Miller scored twice. Jayna Witzany picked up the victory in relief of Menster.

Menster stars as Mustangs sweep

ATCHISON, Kan. - Tawny Menster of Mount Mercy deserved five stars for  her performance in the first game of a doubleheader Sunday against  Benedictine College.

Menster collected six RBIs and struck out 10 batters as the Mustangs  walloped Benedictine, 18-2, in the opener. Mount Mercy took the  nightcap, 5-3, to sweep the Heart of America Conference twinbill.

Menster was 3-for-5 in the opener with a two-run double, three-run  homer and RBI single for the Mustangs. She also pitched a complete  game, allowing four hits and two runs.

Payton Bruner went 3-for-4 with three runs and two RBIs in the 18-2  victory. Morgan Braughton was also 3-for-4 and scored twice. Jess  Heick, Emily Oler and Michelle Mack had two hits. Jessica Miller,  Heick, Menster and Oler all scored twice. Jaicee Lyons, Sydnee Turner  and Mack had two RBIs.

Mount Mercy scored 10 runs in the sixth inning, turning an 8-2 lead  into an 18-2 blowout.

Irwin, Mustangs blank No. 19 Baker

BALDWIN CITY, Kan. - Madelyn Irwin tossed a one-hit shutout Friday as  the Mount Mercy softball team blanked 19th-ranked Baker, 8-0, in the  second game of their Heart of America Conference doubleheader.

Baker won the first game, 14-2, on a combined one-hitter by two of its  pitchers.

Mount Mercy jumped to a 5-0 lead in the nightcap and Irwin did the  rest in the five-inning contest. She allowed only one single with two  strikeouts and one walk.

Tawny Menster and Jolona Shield belted home runs for the Mustangs in  the 8-0 victory. Jess Heick was 2-for-3 with two RBIs. Shield and  Emily Oler also had two hits. Menster drove in two runs.

Mount Mercy - Softball

Mount Mercy softball sweeps Loras

The Mount Mercy softball team took advantage of the favorable weather  Thursday and swept a non-conference doubleheader from Loras, 7-1 and  5-3, at Busse Field.

The twin-killing lifted the Mustangs to 7-and-5 for the campaign and  dropped Loras to 6-9-1.

Madelyn Irwin pitched six strong innings for Mount Mercy in the 7-1  victory in the opener. She allowed one earned run on four hits, with  six strikeouts and two walks.

Payton Bruner went 2-for-3 with two doubles and two RBIs in the first  game. Sydney Robertson also had two hits.
