Mustang softball team stays hot

The Mount Mercy softball team continued its strong play Sunday, sweeping Viterbo, 8-0 and 6-1, on Sunday in a Midwest Collegiate Conference doubleheader at Tomahawk Park.

Sunday's sweep gave the Mustangs six wins in their last seven games entering Monday's 5 p.m. regular-season finales against Grand View at Tomahawk.

In Game 1, Amanda Gaffey had a home run, double and three RBIs, going 3-for-3. Ellie Rizor had a pair of doubles, driving home three runs. Alexis Ferguson had two hits and two RBIS and Hannah Petersen also finished with two hits.

Liz Moore got the win, allowing just two hits while striking out four.

Rizon and Maddie Flemr each homered for the Mustangs in the nightcap. L.J. Putzier also had two hits, driving home a pair.

Claudia Magana was the winning pitcher, scattering five hits.

Viterbo is 5-34, 3-20.

Magana hits, pitches Mustangs to split

DES MOINES - Claudia Magana pitched a complete game and pounded out a solo home run to lead Mount Mercy to a 5-2 win over AIB in the second game of a Midwest Collegiate Conference doubleheader on Friday.

AIB won the opener, 11-5.

Magana struck out two and walked two, scattering eight hits to gain her fourth win. LJ Putzier also homered while Hannah Petersen drove home two runs.

The Mustangs (15-24, 4-14, MCC) led 4-3 in the opener before AIB broke loose for eight runs against three Mount Mercy pitchers in the sixth inning.

Mustangs' Gaffey earns MCC softball honor

Mount Mercy junior first baseman Amanda Gaffey was named the Midwest Collegiate Conference Softball Player of the Week on Monday for her play last week.

The Cedar Rapids Kennedy graduate batted .500 (4-for-8) with a triple and three home runs in just two games. She scored three runs and drove home five as the Mustangs split a doubleheader at Viterbo.

Mount Mercy is 13-20 overall, 2-10 in league play entering a home doubleheader with AIB on Tuesday.

Gaffey hits 3 homers as Mustangs split

LA CROSSE, Wis. - Amanda Gaffey belted three home runs for the Mount Mercy softball team Wednesday as the Mustangs split a Midwest Collegiate Conference doubleheader at Viterbo.

Mount Mercy won the first game, 9-7. Viterbo took the nightcap, 8-7, in eight innings.

Gaffey went 2 for 4 with a homer and two RBIs in the first game. She went 2-for-4 in the second game with two homers and three RBIs.

Cayla Bantz, Maddi Vaske and L.J. Putzier also socked home runs for Mount Mercy in the first game. Bantz hit a two-run homer as a pinch-hitter. Ellie Rizor drove in three runs.

Petersen's HR gives Mustangs first MCC win

Former Jefferson standout Hannah Petersen belted a leadoff home run in the bottom of the seventh inning to give Mount Mercy its first Midwest Collegiate Conference win on Sunday, a 4-3 triumph over William Penn at Tomahawk Park.

William Penn bounced back to win the nightcap, 15-2.

Petersen had three hits in four trips to the plate for the Mustangs (12-19, 1-9). She also scored three runs. Petersen was the starting pitcher, but came out in the fifth after allowing three runs. Sara Kron picked up the win in relief for the Mustangs.

The nightcap was tied at 2-2 entering the fifth but the visitors scored 13 runs over the final three innings, including nine in the seventh, to gain the win.

Ellie Rizor had two hits in Game 2 for Mount Mercy. Maddi Vaske had a pinch-hit single driving home both Mustang runsin the fourth.

William Penn is 13-24, 6-6.
