Mount Mercy softball stung by Bees

DAVENPORT - St. Ambrose scored a run in the bottom of the seventh inning Wednesday to trim Mount Mercy, 4-3, in a Midwest Collegiate Conference softball game in Davenport.

The second game of the doubleheader was suspended due to darkness with two outs in the bottom of the sixth inning with St. Ambrose clinging to an 8-7 lead.

Ellie Rizer went 2-for-3 with a home run and three RBIs for Mount Mercy in the first game. Brianna Sturtz also went 2-for-3.

The loss dropped the Mustangs to 10-16 overall and 0-7 in the league. St. Ambrose is 11-10 overall and 6-4.

Mount Mercy softball drops pair

The Mount Mercy softball team lost a pair of two-run games to Clarke on Tuesday, 7-5 and 12-10, in a Midwest Collegiate Conference doubleheader at Tomahawk Park in Cedar Rapids.

L.J. Putzier, Amanda Gaffey and Carson Burgart had two hits for Mount Mercy in the first game. Gaffey drove in two runs.

Alexis Ferguson and Putzier belted home runs for the Mustangs in the second game. Burgart went 3-for-4. Ferguson, Putzier, Gaffey and Brianna Sturtz had two hits. Ferguson had three RBIs and Sturtz drove in two runs.

Mount Mercy - Softball

Mustangs belt 5 homers in sweep

GRINNELL - The Mount Mercy softball team hit five home runs Saturday and swept a doubleheader from Grinnell, 10-4 and 8-1, in Grinnell.

Shannon Stone and Amanda Gaffey connected in the first game as the Mustangs prevailed, 10-4. LJ Putzier belted two homers and Gaffey connected again as the Mustangs took the nightcap, 8-1.

The sweep lifted Mount Mercy to 10-13 overall. Grinnell remained winless for the season at 0-16.

Ellie Rizor went 3-for-4 and drove in five runs for Mount Mercy in the first game. Putzier, Gaffey and Brianna Sturtz had two hits. Liz Moore and Tori Nimmo split the pitching for the Mustangs.

Mount Mercy - Softball

Mount Mercy softball drops twinbill

DES MOINES - The Mount Mercy softball team began its conference season Sunday with a pair of losses to Grand View, 8-0 and 10-9.

The setbacks dropped the Mustangs to 8-11 overall and 0-2 in the Midwest Collegiate Conference. Grand View raised its records to 15-6 overall and 7-1 in the league.

Hannah Petersen, Amanda Gaffey and Carson Burgart hit home runs for Mount Mercy in the second game. Petersen and Burgart collected three RBIs and Gaffey drove in two runs.

Claudia Magana, Petersen and LJ Putzier had two hits for the Mustangs in the second game. Magana and Gaffey scored twice.

Mount Mercy had only two hits in the first game.

Mustangs swept by No.12 Mobile

MOBILE, Ala. - The Mount Mercy softball team lost a doubleheader to 23th-ranked Mobile Wednesday, 12-4 and 8-1, on its spring trip to Alabama.

The losses dropped the Mustangs to 8-9 for the season. Mobile raised its record to 14-7.

Amanda Gaffey hit a home run for Mount Mercy in the opener. Alexis Ferguson was 2-for-3 and scored two runs. L.J. Putzier had two RBIs.
