J-Hawks stun Cougars behind Hollingsworth

Kennedy Coach Bret Hoyer cut straight to the point when asked the difference between the Cougars' 15-5 win Monday at Jefferson and their 6-4 loss to the J-Hawks Tuesday night at Kennedy.

"The pitching," Hoyer said. "(Bailey) Hollinsgworth is a good pitcher who threw well. Alex (Larson) is a good pitcher who didn't throw well. It's pretty simple."

Jefferson's Hollingsworth scattered six hits, allowed two home runs and did not strike out a batter Tuesday night against the Cougars. Yet he was dominant, mixing in fastballs and curves that kept the Kennedy hitters off-balance, resulting in 13 flyball outs, seven groundball outs and one line drive out.

"I was pitching to contact," said Hollingsworth (3-3), who came into the game with a 6.15 ERA yet has been the J-Hawks' most consistent pitcher over the past two weeks. "I wasn't too worried about striking anybody out and I let my defense do all the work. I got a lot of help from my fielders."

The J-Hawks (10-21, 8-16) were the beneficiaries of some friendly ground ball hops and made several exceptional plays. Right fielder Jake Schmidt hauled in a foul fly down the line for the second out in the bottom of the seventh, then raced into the right-center field gap and stretched out his 6-foot-4 frame to rob Griffin Michael of a possible game-tying double for the game's final out.

"At first I thought, 'Oh, no,' " Hollingsworth said of Michael's drive. "Then I saw Jake reach up with his really long arms and haul it in and it felt great."

While Hollingsworth and J-Hawk backers held their breath, Schmidt said he had a bead on the ball when it left the bat.

"I knew (Michael) was the kind of hitter that could hit it there, so I was kind of creeping over that way," Schmidt said. "I was just trying to sprint as hard as I could, hoping I could get there. If I had to lay out, I would have."

Another big difference in the game was the Jefferson offense, which got untracked Tuesday before the J-Hawks were down 15 runs. Tanner Unkel led off the game with a double, stole third and scored when catcher Jim Lizarraga fired the ball into left field for an error.

"Tanner got on and set the tone right away for us," Jefferson Coach Mike Kuba said. "We were able to catch them on their heels in the first inning."

Kennedy tied the game up in the bottom of the first on a two-out double steal, Terrell Sykes scoring from third after courtesy runner Josh Jahlas drew a throw to second base while stealing.

The J-Hawks reclaimed lead in the fourth inning on Hollingsworth's one-out RBI single.

Jefferson then tacked on four unearned runs in the sixth inning to take command of the game, 6-1. Michael Rooney singled leading off the inning and stole second base. He was still there two outs later when Hoyer decided to intentionally walk Hollingsworth. Schmidt came up and smashed a hard grounder off the glove of first baseman Logan Ambrosy for a run-scoring error. Colten Jourdan followed with an infield single that plated another run and Christian Knox smoked a two-run double to cap the rally.

"That infield single before the double probably hurt the most," Hoyer said.

Jourdan was batting for the first time in the game. Designated hitter Jordan Dee fanned his first two at-bats, so Jourdan batted against reliever Nick Appleget and found the hole between short and third.

"I about fell out of the batters box. I was pretty excited when I made contact," said Jourdan, who had only two hits in 11 at-bats and no RBIs coming into the game. "I had to step up. I don't get too many at-bats. I had to do something with it."

Knox's blow provided the winning margin.

"I had struck out and popped up before that, so I knew had to flush that, like the coach always says," Knox said. "It was my time and I had to take it."

Those runs proved crucial when the Cougars came back with three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. After retiring the first two batters on a pitch apiece, Hollingsworth left a fastball over the plate and Devon Jacobus took it the opposite way over the right-field wall for a home run. Cody Bell singled and David Yancey drove a ball over the center-field wall for a two-run home run that pulled the Cougars within 6-4.

"I missed my spot on David's and Devon, he earned his," Hollingsworth said.

That led to some seventh inning drama. Ambrosy singled leading off the inning. He was still at first two outs later when Austin Christensen, who has 15 home runs this season, was scheduled to hit. Jefferson pitching coach Gordy Nordgren visited Hollingsworth on the mound and asked him if he'd rather pitch to the lefty-swinging Christensen, or on-deck batter Michael, who was one of Hollingsworth's teammates growing up playing USSSA ball.

"He asked me and I said Christensen and he said, 'Too bad,' " Hollingsworth said.

"We were not going to let (Christensen) tie it," Kuba said of the strategy that brought potential winning run in Michael to the plate. "We knew he was the right man at the right time and we weren't going to allow that tonight."

The gambit paid off when Schmidt tracked down Michael's drive.

"Jake did a great job playing the gaps and the line," Kuba said. "He made two great plays for us right there at the end."

And Jefferson came away with its best win of what has been a disappointing season.

"It was a great seven innings of baseball," Kuba said.

"This was the defending state champ, you really can't get much bigger of a win than that," Hollingsworth said.

While Jefferson reveled in the win, Kennedy (26-8, 19-5) was left to lick its wounds. The Cougars' lead over Dubuque Wahlert for the Mississippi Division title was shaved to a half-game when the Golden Eagles beat Hempstead, 6-5, Tuesday night. Wahlert can move into a tie with a win at Hempstead Wednesday night. The conference season concludes Friday. Kennedy plays a doubleheader at Waterloo West and Wahlert hosts Xavier.

"We flush this one and we move on," Hoyer said. "We know we have to sweep Waterloo West for the conference championship. We know we're going to have to have a great effort - in both games. We can't count on Wahlert to lose. We have to win out."

Jefferson plays North Scott Wednesday night in a JV/varsity doubleheader at Veterans Memorial Stadium starting at 5 p.m. The J-Hawks close out the conference season Friday with a home doubleheader against Waterloo East.

Jefferson and Kennedy meet again a week from Friday in a Class 4A substate tournament first round game at Kennedy.

No.7 Cougars give old buddy a rough time

Alex Larson wanted a chance to pitch against his friends and former Kennedy teammates Monday afternoon, but it was not a happy Fourth of July for Larson or the Jefferson J-Hawks.

Larson was chased early and the seventh-ranked Cougars pounded the J-Hawks, 15-5, in five innings at the Jefferson field.

Larson grew up in the Kennedy district and saw spot duty for the Cougars last summer when they won the Class 4A state title. His family moved into the Jefferson district and he elected to spend his senior year with the J-Hawks, although he would have been eligible at Kennedy High School as well.

Larson has played regularly at Jefferson this season and he welcomed the opportunity to pitch against Kennedy. Jefferson Coach Mike Kuba was happy to oblige.

"I actually told Coach I wanted the ball," Larson said. "I just wanted a shot at them."

The game began poorly for Larson and did not improve from there. He hit his friend, Terrell Sykes, with the second pitch of the game and then walked three straight batters. Before the first inning was over, the Cougars had scored three runs on no hits, four walks, two wild pitches and one hit batter.

Griffin Michael blasted a two-run homer off Larson in the second inning and Sykes chased Larson from the mound in the third inning with another two-run shot to make it 8-0.

"They're a really tough team to pitch against," Larson said. "They hit mistakes hard. You have to throw a perfect game, basically. They're a great team and hard to beat."

Kennedy kept scoring and grabbed a 15-0 bulge in the top of the fifth inning. Jefferson scored five runs in the bottom of the fifth, but that wasn't enough and the game ended by the 10-run rule.

The Cougars raised their records to 26-7 overall and 19-4 in the Mississippi Valley Conference as they chase a division title. The J-Hawks fell to 9-21 overall and 7-16.

Sykes went 3-for-3, drove in four runs and reached base five straight times. He was 2-for-2 against Larson and scored three runs against his old buddy.

Sykes, Larson and all the seniors at Kennedy played youth baseball together for the Junior Cougars, so this game was like playing against a member of your own family.

"It's a lot different. I grew up with him," Sykes said. "This was our last year all together, and he left us to try something different. Usually we're joking around and messing with him on the team, and now he's somewhere else."

Larson and Sykes had a chance to talk during the game when Larson reached second base as a runner.

"He said he hates pitching against us," Sykes remarked. "He's like, 'We can't make a mistake against you guys.' So it's tough for him, but he's on another team and he has to do what he has to do."

Kuba was glad Larson wanted to pitch against Kennedy.

"I'll take a pitcher with confidence wanting the ball any day of the week," Kuba said. "That's something he was ready for and he certainly wanted.

"Sure, there's going to be some jitters, and we knew that going into it. I think he was just trying to pitch too hard, trying to over-pitch the hitters. He knows those guys, and I think he was just forcing spots and really trying to keep the ball down."

Alex Hayden pitched four shutout innings for Kennedy. The J-Hawks reached him for five runs on five hits in the bottom of the fifth, but Zach Johnson came into pitch and got the final out.

Devon Jacobus went 3-for-3 with two doubles, continuing his hot hitting for the Cougars.

Kennedy and Jefferson play again Tuesday at approximately 7 p.m. at Kennedy in the second game of their MVC series. They'll meet again in a Class 4A substate game on July 15 at Kennedy.

"We have 11 days to really get better," Kuba said.

J-Hawks fall twice to Mustangs

After playing some of their best baseball for the past week and a half, the Jefferson J-Hawks took a step backward Friday night in the nightcap of its doubleheader against Dubuque Hempstead.

Hempstead won the opener, 6-5, then scored eight unearned runs and took the nightcap, 11-3.

The losses snapped Jefferson's modest three-game winning streak, which was its longest of the season. The losses were the J-Hawks' sixth in their last 10 games. Five have been by one run.

"Errors came back to nip us again," Jefferson Coach Mike Kuba said. "It gave them outs and created big innings. We just can't be doing that this time of the year.

"You just can't give a good team outs and that's what we did. Teams are going to hit the ball."

Hempstead (18-15, 12-10) banged out 28 hits in the doubleheader.

Jefferson (9-20, 7-15) broke out to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning in the opener. Michael Rooney and Alex Larson belted back-to-back home runs and Bailey Hollingsworth had an RBI single.

Hempstead tied the game with three runs in the third inning. Sean Fitzgerald, who had four of Hempstead's 17 hits in the opener, plated the first run with an infield single. Two more scored on back-to-back RBI singles by Cody Leach and Brad Duwe.

The J-Hawks reclaimed the lead in the bottom of the fourth, 4-3, on Jake Schmidt's RBI single.

But the Mustangs came back with three runs in the top of the fifth to gain their first lead, 6-4. Aaron Collins, who had three hits, singled home one run, and another scored on the play when Hollingsworth's throw from right fielder Hollingsworth to catcher Striegel bounced to the backstop after Striegel's glove was ripped off by baserunner Pete Kelleher scoring the first run. Striegel strode after Kelleher as he jogged to the bench and left the plate unguarded, allowing Nick Johnson to score the second run.

Kuba pleaded with plate umpire Randy Christensen for an interference call on Kelleher, but Christensen told him in a voice loud enough for the crowd to hear that he didn't see the play and, thus, could not call interference.

Jake Bortscheller followed with an RBI double that tacked on a necessary insurance run.

The J-Hawks added a run in the bottom of the sixth on Tanner Unkel's RBI single and had the bases loaded with one out. Larson hit a flyball to medium center field and Schmidt, running at third base, was late to tag up and unable to score. Jordan McCormick flied out to right to end the inning.

Bortscheller, making his first start for the Mustangs during an injury-plagued junior campaign, retired the side in order in the bottom of the seventh, fanning the first two batters and getting the last on a soft liner back to the mound.

While Bortscheller scattered nine hits and struck out eight, Nick Barker limited the J-Hawks to five hits, struck out two, got eight outs via pop ups and 10 more groundouts.

Hempstead was playing its fourth doubleheader in five days. After dropping a pair to Prairie on Monday, the Mustangs split with Davenport Central on Tuesday and No.8 Xavier on Wednesday before sweeping the J-Hawks.

Hempstead Coach Jeff Rapp said he thought pitching was going to be his team's strength before the season.

"It just hasn't really come together until this week," Rapp said. "Some guys are opening my eyes.

"We know this is the time of the year that you want to get hot."

The first game loss led to a second game collapse for the J-Hawks.

"It's always tough bouncing back after a tough one like that," Larson said. "You try to flush it, but it always happens to linger there for a while."

"We came out flat, flatter than we should have," Unkel said. "We should have shook up the bats and made the routine plays. Obviously, nights like this happen, where you're just not all there mentally.

"Words can't explain how bad that was tonight. We just need to battle like we have been and play better than we did tonight."

Hempstead scored three runs in the second inning and five runs in the fourth to take an 8-0 lead. Six of the runs were unearned, thanks to three Jefferson errors. An error opened the door in the third inning. The runs scored on an RBI single, bases-loaded walk and fielder's choice.

The Mustangs got five runs in the fourth despite managing only three hits. Nick Stevenson doubled in the only earned run.

Jefferson scored three runs in the fifth to pull within 8-3. Schmidt doubled home the first run and Sam Techau and Unkel had RBI singles.

But Hempstead came right back with three runs in the sixth. Leach hit a one-out solo home run, another scored when right fielder Hollingsworth dropped a fly that would have been the third out and the third scored on Collins' RBI double that Hollingsworth dove for and missed.

Jefferson hosts Kennedy on Monday at 2 p.m. and then plays at Kennedy on Tuesday at 7 p.m. Both dates are sophomore/varsity doubleheaders.

"We got one game Monday and that's where we have to shift our focus," Kuba said.

"It will be fun," said Larson, who transferred to Jefferson from Kennedy for his final season. "I'm excited."

J-Hawks sweep away Senior

DUBUQUE - Tanner Unkel is special and Bailey Hollingsworth was likewise for the Jefferson baseball team Wednesday night at Dubuque Senior.

Unkel tripled home the tying run in the seventh inning and the winning run in the ninth in Jefferson's 12-7 win over Senior in the opener of a Mississippi Valley Conference doubleheader.

Hollingsworth then went out and pitched a five-inning one-hitter with six strikeouts in the J-Hawks' 8-1 win in the nightcap.

The twinbill sweep was the first of the season for Jefferson (9-18, 7-13) and gave the J-Hawks three straight wins for the first time.

The J-Hawks banged out 22 hits, five by Unkel and four each by Michael Rooney and Alex Larson, in the doubleheader. They also committed but one error on defense.

"Key hitting, key defensive plays and key pitching," was how Jefferson Coach Mike Kuba summed up the sweep.

Larson was the starting pitcher in the opener and was tagged by Senior's Mike Hansen for a grand slam that put the Rams ahead 6-1 in the second inning. He allowed only two hits over the next five innings before giving way to Chance Tiedtke to start the eighth.

"It was a gutty performance," Kuba said.

The J-Hawks tallied two runs in the third and two more in the fourth, but still trailed 6-5 with two outs and a runner at third base in the top of the seventh.

Unkel had a 2-ball, 2-strike count when he hammered a sinking liner to right. Senior's right fielder made a diving stab, but the ball bounced past him and Unkel raced to third for a triple.

"I was looking for his curveball, because that's all I had been seeing all night," Unkel said. "I was just looking to take it to the opposite field and that's what I did."

Unkel also had five hits in the J-Hawks' doubleheader split Monday night at Waterloo West, making him 10-for-16 in his last four games. Four of his hits have been for extra bases.

"I'm not looking for a home run or a double," said Unkel, who has signed to play at North Iowa Area Community College next school year. "I'm just looking to put the ball in play and good things will happen. That's what I've been taught."

"He's just a competitor," Kuba said. "When you're a gamer like that, and you hate to lose and you'll do anything to win, he just brings that gaming attitude day in and day out."

The J-Hawks scored an unearned run in the eighth-inning when a two-out wild pitch plated Jordan McCormick, who had reached on an error and moved to third on Hollingsworth's double.

Senior tied the game up again in the bottom of the eighth on David Janes' two-out RBI single. It was the Rams' first run since the second inning.

Sam Techau led off the ninth inning with a single and went to second on a wild pitch. One out later, Unkel singled home Techau with the go-ahead run. Michael Rooney folllowed with a single and Alex Larson singled home Unkel. McCormick put an exclamation point on the inning by lining a home run over the left field wall for a 12-7 lead.

In the nightcap, Jefferson scored four runs in the second inning and four more in the fourth for an 8-0 lead. Rooney, celebrating his 19th birthday, had a two-run single in the second inning and Unkel an RBI double in the fourth.

Hollingsworth faced only two batters over the minimum and was perfect through three innings, fanning five. Connor Grant led off the Senior fourth with a groundball to shortstop and was ruled to have beaten Larson's throw for an infield single. Grant worked his way to third with two outs and scored on a wild pitch. Hollingsworth set down the side in order in the fifth.

"I was a little bit angry inside," Hollingsworth admitted of the infield hit call. "But I knew we had a lead and that was what was important."

Hollingsworth (2-3) came into the game with a 7.21 ERA that belied his effectiveness of late. He tossed a complete game victory against 10th ranked Iowa City West 10 days ago and had a fastball that was hopping Wednesday.

"Getting the run support behind me was key," Hollingsworth said.

The game was called on account of darkness after five innings. The diamond at Dubuque Senior is not lighted.

Jefferson hosts Dubuque Hempstead for a doubleheader Friday at 5 p.m.

"I'm just hoping we can get two more Friday night," Unkel said. "It all came together tonight. We're peaking at the right time."

Striegel, Rooney deliver J-Hawk split

WATERLOO -- Drew Striegel found himself batting in a clutch situation for the fourth time in Jefferson's last five baseball games when he stepped into the batters box Monday night in the top of the seventh inning against Waterloo West.

For the second time he delivered, stroking a bases-loaded two-run single through West's drawn in infield.

And for the first time, the J-Hawks made it stand up.

Striegel's hit and Michael Rooney's seven strong innings on the mound sent Jefferson past West, 6-4, in the second game of a Mississippi Valley Conference doubleheader at Danny Vansyoc Memorial Field.

Waterloo West won the first game, 3-2, scoring the winning run on a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the seventh inning. That loss was Jefferson's fourth straight and all were by one run. It was the third consecutive walk-off loss.

"It shows we can play with anybody, but maybe we just kind of play to our opponents' level," said Striegel, whose grand slam against Xavier last Friday gave the J-Hawks a three-run lead in the top of the seventh inning. The Saints came back with four runs in the bottom of the seventh, and then won the second game with a hit in the bottom of the seventh. "It was nice knowing that we could go over to Xavier and they're at the top of the rankings and we could hang with them and almost give them a loss."

Perhaps that Xavier experience was a necessary lesson for the J-Hawks, Coach Mike Kuba said.

"That was tough," Kuba said. "Who would've thought that we would lose three straight games like that. But the kids didn't give up and they battled back.

"We haven't folded from last Friday to now and we very easily could have. We've had guys in key spots that have been able to get us up again."

Tanner Unkel, who had three hits in the nightcap, led off the Jefferson seventh inning with a single. Rooney and Alex Larson followed with beautiful bunts that turned into base hits and loaded the bases.

Cleanup hitter Jordan Dee was at the plate with a 1-ball, 0-strike count when Kuba decided to gamble and put on a squeeze play. Dee missed the sign and flied out to medium right. Unkel, who was two-thirds of the way to the plate when Dee swung, was unable to tag up and score.

That brought Striegel to the plate. He spanked a sharp grounder just to the left of West shortstop Derrick Vaughn, who dove and missed the ball. Two runs scored.

"Things turned out just fine," Kuba said.

Jefferson still had to get three outs in the bottom of the seventh and for a team that had lost three straight in that frame, that was no guarantee.

"Roon was throwing great all day. His breaking ball was really good," Striegel said. "I was little more comfortable coming into the seventh with him, I think."

"I didn't throw much last week, so my arm was 100 percent ... I felt good and I knew I could get them out," said Rooney (2-4), who came into the game with a 7.00 ERA in just 20 innings pitched. The slender senior southpaw struck out seven and induced eight groundball outs. "They got some runners on, but we got out of it."

Not without an anxious moment or two.

Rooney got the first two outs on a liner and grounder to Unkel at second base. But Vaughn singled and sophomore designated hitter Zach Fricke followed with a single to put runners at first and second. Cleanup batter Conrad Bush stepped to the plate. After fouling off three pitches, he launched another foul ball just past the Jefferson dugout that fell in the field of play behind Dee, the J-Hawks first baseman, who had overrun it.

Striegel, Jefferson's senior catcher, made a trip to the mound to reassure Rooney, who was working on his first complete game of the season.

"I haven't told Drew this, but I was real glad to see him go right out to Roon and calm him down," Kuba said. "That's leadership there."

Rooney made his next pitch and Bush again popped it high into the twilight sky. This time the ball barely left the hitting circle. Striegel camped under it and made the catch for the third out.

And a victory.

"Our bats are starting to come alive and are outfielders are making some amazing catches," Striegel said. "We need to get the bats going more consistently and I think we're back on track for the substate and, hopefully, going a long way."

The J-Hawks sent 10 men to the plate and scored four runs in the top of the second inning. Sam Techau, Unkel, Rooney and Dee had RBI singles.

West scored twice in the bottom of the fourth to tie the game, 4-4.

Jefferson jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the opener when Unkel lined the first pitch of the game over the left-field wall for a home run. The J-Hawks tacked on another run when Rooney, who had walked and stolen second, scored on a wild pitch.

But those were the only runs the J-Hawks managed.

West scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the third on Fricke's two-run single that tied the game, 2-2.

Vaughn led off the bottom of the seventh with a single, stole second and, one out later, moved to third on Bush's single.

Kuba lifted senior starter Jordan McCormick (0-2) in favor of junior Colten Jourdan and Ben Stokes lofted a fly ball to medium center field. Rooney hauled it in, but Vaughn beat his throw to the plate with the winning run.

"We didn't give that game away. They took it from us," Kuba said. "That's one thing we've been talking about. When things are close, we need to be the ones that are taking the game, instead of just hanging on. We have to learn to take it right away from them, and we did a nice job of that in the seventh inning of game two."

Jefferson plays a doubleheader at Dubuque Senior on Wednesday afternoon. The J-Hawks host Hempstead in a doubleheader Friday.
