Uthoff has 23, J-Hawks rout Senior

Jefferson returned to the hardcourt Tuesday night after the winter break with a 54-34 victory over Dubuque Senior.

With substates coming out Jan. 17, the No. 7 J-Hawks hope to get hot to start the second portion of their season.

The win moved Jefferson’s record to 6-1 and 3-1 in the Mississippi Valley Conference. The Rams dropped to 4-3, 1-3.

When asked about his team’s goals for their first game of 2011, Coach Stu Ordman said, “We wanted to see effort and execution. We were not as consistent as I hoped, but that gives up something to work on. I thought Taylor Olson had an outstanding game and Ky Kramer played a great defensive game.”

Jarrod Uthoff sets J-Hawk scoring mark

Jarrod Uthoff gets straight A’s at Jefferson, he’s served as class president and he’s determined to keep improving as a basketball player.

That’s why Coach Stu Ordman left Uthoff in a lopsided game against Marion Saturday (Dec. 11). He wanted to give the 6-foot-8 senior a chance to break the school record for most points in a single contest.

The big guy did it.

Uthoff poured in 44 points as the third-ranked J-Hawks topped the Indians, 73-48, at Marion.

Uthoff tosses in 40 in J-Hawks win

DUBUQUE — No. 3 Jefferson continues to roll through their opponents with Tuesday (Dec. 14) night’s beating of an undersized Dubuque Hempstead, 67-47.

The win moves Jefferson’s record to 5-0 (2-0 in the MVC). The matchup saw two of the conference’s top six leading scorers in Jefferson’s Jarrod Uthoff (29.8) and Hempstead’s Gage Heffernan (21.7).

Uthoff picked up right where he left off Saturday night   when he scored a school-record 44 points. In the first half Jarrod accounted for 22 of the J-Hawks 32. Uthoff finished with 40 points on 16-24 shooting (8-10 on free throws). He also added 15 rebounds. On the other side Heffernan finished with a team-high 15.

When asked about his game Uthoff continues to praise his teammates.

Warriors handcuff Uthoff and J-Hawks

If you stop Jarrod Uthoff, you stop the J-Hawks.

That’s exactly what Washington did Friday night (Dec. 17).

The 10th-ranked Warriors held the state’s leading scorer without a field goal in the final 14 minutes of the game and tripped No.3 Jefferson, 49-41, before a packed gym at Washington.

Uthoff, a 6-foot-8 senior who has signed with Wisconsin, began the game with a gaudy 31.8 average, albeit against less than robust competition. The Warriors held him to 17 points in the game and to just two points in the fourth quarter, both on free throws.

Washington (4-1, 3-0 MVC) sagged all over Uthoff with double-teams and triple-teams. He shot 5-for-13 from the field and made his last field goal with about 6 minutes left in the third quarter.

J-Hawks score early, often in rout of City High

If you arrived late or blinked at the beginning of the game, you missed a flurry by the Jefferson boys’ basketball team. It was like that all night on Dec. 10.

The J-Hawks drubbed Iowa City High, 70-19, in a Mississippi Valley Conference mismatch at Jefferson.

Jefferson led, 48-5, at halftime.
