Uthoff signs with Wisconsin, thanks sister

Jefferson basketball star Jarrod Uthoff, a thoughtful and talented young man,  thanked a lot of people when he signed his national letter-of-intent Wednesday (Nov. 10) with the University of Wisconsin.

He saved a special “thank-you” for his sister, Erika, who welcomed Jarrod into her home on the southwest side of Cedar Rapids in 2008.

Uthoff lived in Marengo with his parents, Dale and Diane Uthoff, and attended Iowa Valley High School as a freshman, but he wanted to attend a bigger school and face stronger competition to pursue his dream of playing Division I ball.

Uthoff nets 25 in J-Hawks' win

Jarrod Uthoff and the Jefferson J-Hawks have made mincemeat of Mississippi Athletic Conference teams this year.

It happened again Saturday (Dec. 4).

Uthoff tossed in 25 points as the J-Hawks opened a 27-point lead in the third quarter and cruised to a 66-49 victory over Davenport North at home.

J-Hawks overpower Clinton

The Jefferson J-Hawks opened their boys’ basketball season with an overpowering victory against the Clinton River Kings Tuesday night (Nov. 30) at the Jefferson gym.

The J-Hawks put together a stifling defensive effort that created turnover after turnover.  They allowed only 10 points in the first half and held Clinton to zero points in the third quarter.  Jefferson used an aggressive half-court man-to-man astheir base defense, offered up a disruptive press and flashed an occasional zone.

Uthoff could be Iowa's 'Mr. Basketball'

Stu Ordman is a coach, not a cheerleader, so he’s not going to promote Jarrod Uthoff for ‘Mr. Basketball’ honors in Iowa this season.

“I don’t concern myself with that whatsoever,” Ordman said. “I concern myself with making him the best player I possibly can.”

There are many terrific players in Iowa this year, including a bunch in the Metro area alone, but Uthoff could be the best in the group. He’s 6-foot-8 and can run, jump, shoot, handle the ball and dunk with the best of them.

Uthoff averaged 21 points and 10 rebounds last season when the J-Hawks went 18-5 and reached the first round of the Class 4A state tournament. He worked hard during the off-season, gained weight (up to 189 pounds) and appears to have improved.
