Xavier golfers trimmed by Trojans

Grace Winker and Maddie Bertsch both shot 43s, but it wasn't quite enough as Iowa City West edged the Xavier Saints by three strokes to win a Mississippi Valley Conference quadrangular meet Tuesday at St. Andrews.

West was led by Tiffany Danger, who also shot 43 and was medalist by card back. The Trojans finished at 183 and Xavier came in at 186. Jefferson (266) and Waterloo East (289) rounded out the scoring.

Xavier (186): Grace Winker 43, Maddie Bertsch, 43, Catie Locher 49, Kara Zwanziger 51.

Jefferson (266): Emily Smith 64, Regan Grekoff 67, Victoria Day 67, Cassidy Simpson 68.

Furnish wins Iowa Women's Amateur

MASON CITY - Megan Furnish shot a final round 76 Wednesday to capture the 2013 Iowa Women’s Amateur Championship at Mason City Country Club.

Furnish, who came into the final round tied with Jenny Graeser, finished with a total of 13-over-par 229, good enough for a two shot win over Alex Zenor of Cedar Rapids. Zenor shot a final round best 74 to jump into second place.

Furnish is a Cedar Rapids Jefferson grad and Zenor graduated from Kennedy.

Utter leads Prairie to triangular win

Taylor Utter shot a 45 to claim medalist honors and lead Prairie to a win Tuesday at the Washington triangular girls golf meet at Gardner Golf Course.

Prairie beat Washington by 25 strokes. Jefferson was 16 strokes behind the Warriors.

Emily Perrin from Prairie and Jefferson's Emily Aukes were runnersup with 49s.

Jefferson's Emily Aukes was one shot shy of medalist honors Thursday in the J-Hawks' girls golf triangular at Jones Park.

Aukes shot a 47. Iowa City West's Tiffany Danger went low with a 46.

West won the meet with a 194. Jefferson was second at 248 and Waterloo East third at 265.

Jefferson was fourth Tuesday at the Iowa City High quadrangular girls golf meet at Pleasant Valley.

Emily Aukes shot a 50 to lead the J-Hawks.

Cedar Falls, led by a 37 from medalist Allison Rolinger, finished first.
