Furnish shoots 92 at Junior PGA Championship

Megan FurnishFORT WAYNE, Ind. -- Megan Furnish of Cedar Rapids struggled Tuesday and shot a 20-over-par 92 in the opening  round of the 36th Junior PGA Championship at Sycamore Hills Golf Club.

Furnish is tied for 74th place in a field of 78 golfers. She is 24 strokes behind the leader. Casey Danielson of Osceola, Wis., fired a 4-under-par 68 in the first round.

The 72-hole tournament continues through Friday.

Furnish will be a senior at Cedar Rapids Jefferson this year.

Megan Furnish wins PGA Junior Iowa title

Megan Furnish of Cedar Rapids won the 36th PGA Junior Iowa Section Championship Wednesday by firing an even-par 144 during the two-day event at Hunters Ridge Golf Club in Marion.

Furnish beat Beth Wagner of Ankeny by two shots. Kimmy Askelson of Cedar Rapids placed third at 9-over-par 153.

Furnish fired a 2-under-par 70 on Tuesday, then shot a 2-over 74 Wednesday to finish at even par.

Furnish won the girls 16-18 division against 15 other golfers. She will be a senior at Cedar Rapids Jefferson this year.

Furnish qualified for the 36th PGA Junior National Championship that will be held Aug. 2-5 at the Sycamore Hills Golf Club in Fort Wayne, Ind.

Jacob Bermel of Cedar Falls won the boys 16-18 division Wednesday at Hunters Ridge.

Megan Furnish makes U.S. Girls Junior golf meet

ST. CHARLES, Mo. - Megan Furnish of Cedar Rapids shot an 81 Wednesday at a USGA Girls Championship qualifier and advanced to the national tournament in July.

Furnish, a senior-to-be at Jefferson High School, finished third at the qualifier at Bogey Hills Country Club in St. Charles, Mo.

She earned a spot in the U.S. Girls Junior Championship that will be held at the Olympia Fields Country Club in Olympia Fields, Ill., from July 18-23.

Mika Liu of Beverly Hills, Calif., won the qualifier at Bogey Hills with a 73. Julie Yang of Mesa, Ariz., was second with a 76. The top three finishers advanced.

Furnish just misses girls state golf tournament

Linn-Mar had four players break the century mark at Monday's Class 4A regional girls golf meet at Jones Park, but it was Sarah Tegtmeier's 100 that lifted the Lions to the state meet.

Linn-Mar and Ottumwa tied for second place with scores of 366. Qualifying criteria then goes to the fifth golfer on each team. Tegtmeier's 100 was 17 strokes better than Ottumwa's golfer.

Cedar Falls ran away with the team title with a 323. All four Tigers finished among the top five individuals and qualified for state medal play.

Jefferson junior Megan Furnish shot an 86 and finished tied for sixth, one stroke out of qualifying for a state berth.

Emma Lorenz led Linn-Mar with an 89.

Jefferson (410) finished eighth, Prairie (430) 10th and Kennedy (441) 11th.

The Class 4A state golf meet if May 31-June 1 at Adel.

Furnish-less J-Hawks finish 3rd at own triangular

Rachel Thrune shot a 46, Dianna Jensen a 47 and Emma Lorenz a 49 and Linn-Mar cruised to victory Thursday at the Jefferson triangular girls golf meet at Jones Park.

Julie Pople had a 51 for Linn-Mar. The Lions won with 193 total. Waverly-Shell Rock was second at 222 and Jefferson had 239.

Jefferson's top player, Megan Furnish, did not play. She injured her back Tuesday.

The regional golf tournaments are Monday.
