Hansen, Erickson power J-Hawks

KEOKUK - Maddie Hansen and Liv Erickson each blasted home runs as the Jefferson softball team closed its regular season with a 14-5 win over Keokuk on Thursday night.

Hansen finished 3-4 for the No. 5 J-Hawks (33-7). Erin Kuba went 2-for-4 and Hannah Markham added a two-run double.

Senior Alyssa Olson picked up the pitching win, striking out seven.

Jefferson opens Class 5A regional play at home on Saturday at 7 p.m.

Jeff girls swat 6 homers in split

WATERLOO - The Cedar Rapids Jefferson softball team belted six home runs Tuesday while splitting a Mississippi Valley Conference doubleheader at Waterloo West.

The fifth-ranked J-Hawks hit five homers and cruised in the first game, 19-2, in six innings. Waterloo West rebounded and took the nightcap, 9-8, in eight innings.

The split damaged Jefferson's hopes of winning the Valley Division title in the MVC. The J-Hawks finished the league campaign with a 22-4 mark. Iowa City West leads the Valley standings at 20-2 with doubleheaders still on tap against Cedar Rapids Washington and Linn-Mar.

Avery Guy, Maddie Hansen, Erin Kuba, Lindsey Culver and Kennedy Dighton hit home runs for Jefferson in the first game. Culver was 3-for-3 with four RBIs. Guy was 2-for-4 with three RBIs. Hansen, Kuba and Tori Brandon had two hits. Alyssa Olson was the winning pitcher with eight strikeouts.

Maddie Hansen wins Metro Spotlight Award

Maddie Hansen of Cedar Rapids Jefferson is the winner of the Metro Spotlight Award for high school girls this week, the Metro Sports Report announced Sunday night.

Hansen, a senior, is one of the top softball players in Iowa. The all-star catcher is hitting .500 this season with nine home runs and 42 RBIs in 36 games.

The fifth-ranked J-Hawks have a 31-6 record and are challenging Iowa City West for the Valley Division title in the Valley Division after sweeping the Women of Troy last week.

No.5 J-Hawks win twice at tourney

OTTUMWA - The Jefferson J-Hawks won both of their games at the Ottumwa softball tournament Friday and raised their record to 31-6.

The fifth-ranked J-Hawks trimmed Keokuk, 2-1, in eight innings and topped Ottumwa, 4-2.

Taylor Holub went 3-for-3 in the victory over Keokuk. Alissa Good was the winning pitcher.

Avery Guy and Erin Kuba went 2-for-4 in the verdict over Ottumwa. Maddie Hansen had a double and RBI.

Courtney Rawson, an eighth grader, collected her first varsity win for Jefferson against Ottumwa.

No. 5 Jefferson girls sweep Wash

The Cedar Rapids Jefferson softball team climbed back into a virtual tie for first place in the Valley Division on Thursday night by sweeping Washington, 6-3 and 10-0, in a Mississippi Valley Conference twinbill at Jefferson.

The fifth-ranked J-Hawks raised their conference record to 21-3. Iowa City West has a 20-2 mark, leaving them tied in the "games back" column for the Valley Division lead with only a few games left in the 26-game MVC season.

Kennedy Dighton belted a grand slam for Jefferson in the first game Thursday. Maddie Hansen belted a home run and had two RBIs. Alyssa Olson was the winning pitcher.
