J-Hawks dunk Waterloo West

Josie Thompson, Emma Wilkins and Mika McChesney were double-winners Tuesday as Jefferson dunked Waterloo West, 107-70, in a Mississippi Valley Conference swim meet at Jefferson.

Thompson won the 100 fly, Wilkins claimed the 100 backstroke and McChesney took the 100 breaststroke. All three of them swam on the triumphant 200 freestyle relay with Emily Wallace.

Katelyn Canby won the diving for the J-Hawks.

Eckley sparks Jefferson swimmers

WILLIAMSBURG - Hannah Eckley won two individual events and swam on two victorious relays Tuesday night as Jefferson dunked Williamsburg, 108-46, in girls swimming at Williamsburg.

Eckley captured the 200 and 500 freestyle races. She also swam on the 200 medley relay and 400 freestyle relay.

Tessa McRoberts captured the 100 fly and 100 backstroke for the J-Hawks.

Cougars sweep past J-Hawk swimmers

Cedar Rapids Kennedy won all 12 events and rolled to a 152-33 win over Cedar Rapids Jefferson Tuesday night in a Mississippi Valley Conference swimming meet at the Kennedy pool.

Brooke Timmerman was a double winner for Kennedy, taking the 200-yard individual medley and the 100 breaststroke. Timmerman was also a part of two winning relays.

Darby Manternach took top honors in the 50 and 100 free for Kennedy and was on the winning 400 free relay.

J-Hawk swimmers swept by IC West

Iowa City West won all 12 events Tuesday and dunked Jefferson, 135-51, in the first Mississippi Valley Conference girls swimming meet of the season at Jefferson.

Sarah Ritchie captured the 100 fly and 100 breaststroke for Iowa City West.

Josie Thompson of Jefferson finished second in the 50 free and 100 fly.

Jaylee Chung placed second in the 200 free. The J-Hawks also finished second in the 200 free relay and 400 free relay.

Drake nets 2 silver medals at state

MARSHALLTOWN - Judging strictly by her frowns, you might have thought Kelsey Drake had an awful day at the 48th annual state swimming meet in Marshalltown Saturday.

But that wasn't it. She simply wanted to swim faster, especially in the 100 butterfly, even though she submitted the best time of her life by a few tenths of a second.

Drake placed second in both the 200 individual medley and the 100 butterfly, both times to girls who are two or three years older than the Jefferson ninth grader. Her times in both events were good enough to earn her all-American consideration.

The frowns gave way to smiles after the meet as she realized what she had just accomplished in the crowded, noisy pool at the Marshalltown YMCA as just a freshman.
