J-Hawks stunned by Waterloo West in boys tennis

Jefferson won four of six singles matches, but was blanked in doubles and was beaten by Waterloo West, 5-4, Thursday in a Mississippi Valley Conference boys tennis meet at Jefferson.

The J-Hawks won a pair of matches in tiebreaker sets in singles, but suffered a crushing blow when Colten Jourdan lost a 10-8 tiebreaker to Tom Richter in No. 6 singles.

West won all three doubles matches in straight sets.

J-Hawks break Little Hawks in boys tennis

IOWA CITY -- Jefferson won three tiebreaker sets to beat Iowa City High, 6-3, Wednesday in a Mississippi Valley Conference boys tennis meet.

All three Jefferson tiebreaker wins came in singles. Andrew Miller and Andrew Meyer both lost the first set of their matches, but bounced back to win their second sets and forced tiebreakers that they won. Colten Jourdan won his first set, dropped the second, then bounced back to claim the tiebreaker.

Jefferson freshman Jacob Donald was beaten in a tiebreaker in his No. 2 singles match.

Prairie rally upsets J-Hawks in boys tennis

Prairie won three extra set matches and beat Jefferson, 5-4, Saturday in a Mississippi Valley Conference boys tennis meet at Prairie.

The Hawks won the meet when its No. 2 doubles team of Jeremy Cline and Tyce Hoskins won a hard-fought third set match from Jefferson's Jacob Donald and Daniel Britton, 10-8. Cline and Hoskins won the first set on a tiebreaker, 7-6 (6-2) but Donald and Britton won the second, 6-4.

The Hawks forced an extra set twice in singles to keep their hopes alive. Prairie's Kevin LeCaptain beat Donald in a second-set tiebreaker, 7-6 (6-4) then beat the Jefferson freshman 11-9 in a third set for the No. 2 singles match. The Hawks' Derek Willard did likewise to Jefferson's Alec Saunders at No. 6 singles. Saunders won the first set, 6-3, Willard won the second in a tiebreaker, 7-6 (6-1) then took the third, 10-7, for the match.

The match was tied, 3-3, after singles.

The Prairie No. 1 doubles team of Kyle Suther and LeCaptain disposed of Jefferson's Eddie Segarra and Andrew Miller, 6-3, 6-3. Jefferson's No. 3 doubles team of Andrew Meyer and Caleb Pfeil disposed of Prairie's Derek Wheatley and Tim Ferry also in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4.

J-Hawks are Linn-Mar's 24th straight MVC victim

Linn-Mar set the Mississippi Valley Conference record for consecutive wins by a boys tennis team with its 24th Thursday in a 9-0 whitewashing of Jefferson at Linn-Mar.

The Lions broke the previous mark of 23 set by Kennedy.

Linn-Mar is 4-1 overall and 3-0 in the MVC.  The Lions have won their first three conference meets this season by a total score of 27-0.

"We played well tonight in some tough weather conditions for both teams," Linn-Mar Coach Chris Wundram said. "Jefferson is a good team and our guys had to play hard to get the win."

Jefferson dropped to 1-3, 0-3.

Kennedy routs Jefferson in boys tennis

Cedar Rapids Kennedy won all nine matches and blanked Jefferson, 9-0, Tuesday in a Mississippi Valley Conference boys tennis meet.

The Cougars improved to 2-0 overall and in the MVC and have won both conference meets by 9-0 counts.

Jefferson is 1-2 overall, 0-2 in the MVC.
