Timauntay Jones wins 800 at qualifier

WATERLOO - Drake Hickok led Cedar Rapids Washington's march to Des Moines Thursday by winning three events at the Class 4A state qualifying track meet in Waterloo.

Hickok captured the 110 high hurdles and 400 low hurdles and ran the opening leg on Washington's triumphant 4x400 relay with Robert Hogg, Trevor Luebe and Nick Corbett.

The top two finishers in each event automatically qualified for the state meet in Des Moines next Thursday, Friday and Saturday. In addition, 12 at-large berths will be selected from around the state to make for 24 qualifiers in each event at state.

Etienne Nzoyisaba won the 3200 meter run for the Warriors.

Washington finished second in five events Thursday. Will Griffin placed second in the 100 meter dash and Nick Corbett placed second in the 400, and both Warriors finished behind Cedar Falls superstar James Harrington.

Harrington won the 100 in 10.75 seconds, with Griffin next in 10.87 seconds. Harrington took the 400 in 49.06 seconds, the fastest time in the state this year, and Corbett placed second in 49.24, which would have been the top time in Class 4A if Harrington hadn't run just a little faster. Harrington also won the 200 in 22.07 seconds.

Hogg took second place in the 800 in 1:58.43. The Warriors also finished second in the 4x800 relay and the distance medley. Luebe, Joe Berry, Sam Kline and Hogg ran on the 4x800 relay and Mitch Bredeson, Griffin, Corbett and Luebe formed the distance medley.

Timauntay Jones of Jefferson captured the 800 in 1:57.26 for his team's only victory. The J-Hawks did not have any runnerup finishes.

Shaq Harbor is 'good story' for J-Hawks

Shaquille Harbor did not win any races at the Mississippi Valley Conference track meet at Kingston Stadium Friday, but he was a winner nonetheless.

Harbor has experienced quite a bit during the past nine months, enough to make most teenagers dizzy and confused. Instead, Shaq sounds level-headed and determined to make a success of himself in sports and the classroom at Cedar Rapids Jefferson.

Harbor moved from Louisiana to Cedar Rapids in September, was adopted by his biological cousin and her husband in October, began the school year as an eighth grader at McKinley Middle School and was promoted to the freshman class at Jefferson in January.

He joined the Jefferson track team after the season began and has already developed into one of the top young sprinters that Ron Tower has tutored during his 16 years as head coach.

"Good story," Tower said Friday during the MVC Valley Division meet. "He does want to do well."

Tower entered Harbor in the frosh/soph 100-meter dash Friday, but the coach was laughing at himself for not putting Harbor in the varsity 100 after Harbor was clocked in 11.58 seconds. That easily won the frosh/soph race and would have been good enough to place third in the varsity 100.

"Smart coaching, huh?" joked Tower.

Tower said Harbor has been a little inconsistent in his workouts and races, which is understandable considering his youth and inexperience, but he ran a strong opening leg on the varsity 4x100 relay Friday that finished third. It was only the third time all season that Tower let Harbor run on the 4x100 relay.

Tower said Harbor struggled with his workouts when he joined the team, but there was a reason. Tower makes all of his 100 and 200 sprinters train with the 400-meter guys at the beginning of the year and Harbor wasn't too fond of that.

"Coach, Coach," Tower said, laughing as he recalled Harbor's reaction to running longer distances, "I just run the 100!"

Tower said Harbor wasn't ready for varsity competition at the beginning, but he's making up for lost time. "Over the last month he's matured quite a bit," the coach said. "He does want to do well. He's grown up a lot in a month. It's amazing the maturity I've seen."

For his part, Harbor said he's happy to be here and living with his new parents, Chris and LaSheila Yates, and making new friends.

"It feels good. A lot of good people," he said. "I'm focused more on school. And track."

Harbor attended the eighth grade in Alexandria, La., during the 2010-11 school year, but the Cedar Rapids school district decided to have him begin the 2011-12 school year here in the eighth grade again since he arrived a few weeks after the fall semester began.

"No, it didn't make me mad," he said. "It made me get motivated. Like, 'I have to do this, I have to get out of this school.'"

Harbor said his favorite sports have been football and basketball, but he's developed a fondness for track. "I like track," he said. "It gets me fit and ready for football."

Harbor is a running back, with good speed and a strong body. Brian Webb, Jefferson's new football coach, might have a pleasant surprise this fall. The new coach and new J-Hawk have not met yet, but they undoubtedly will soon.

"I haven't had a chance to talk to him yet, but I'm anxious to talk to him," said Harbor.

As you might expect since he's from Louisiana, Shaquille Harbor was named after former Louisiana State and NBA basketball star Shaquille O'Neal. "My grandmother told my mom that she likes Shaquille O'Neal, so they decided to name me Shaquille," he said. "No. Never met him."

Harbor served notice Friday that he could be a force for Jefferson sports teams in the coming years. Meanwhile, the powerful track teams from Iowa City West and Cedar Falls dominated the Valley Division meet at Kingston on a warm day.

Iowa City West won the team championship with 169 points and Cedar Falls finished second at 118.

The Xavier Saints won four events and placed third in the team standings. Craig Murtha claimed the shot put and discus for Xavier, Alec Clasen won the high jump and the quartet of Nick Ball, Jordan Weber, Zach Stovie and Brandon Gradoville captured the sprint medley.

Jacob Aune was a double champion in the 3200 and 1600 meter runs for the Prairie Hawks.

Timauntay Jones won the 800 for Jefferson in a swift time of 1:55.84.

Timauntay Jones aiming for 800 at Drake

Timauntay Jones has the Drake Relays on his mind.

He goes to sleep and thinks about Drake. He's sitting in class at Jefferson High School and thinks about Drake. He tries to do his homework and, well, you get the idea.

He thinks about Drake.

"It's on my mind all the time," Jones said Monday afternoon before practice at Kingston Stadium. "I mean, I can be sitting in class and paying attention and I start thinking about it."

Jones, just a junior but already one of the top half-milers in the state, will compete in the prestigious Drake Relays on Friday in the sprint medley, 800 meter run and 4x400 relay.

"It's a dream come true. It really is," he said about his first trip to the Drake Relays as a contestant.

The 800 is his speciality. He finished seventh at the Class 4A state meet last year as a sophomore and posted a personal best of 1:57.60 during the 2011 campaign.

He's already clocked a 1:56.90 this season and is ranked No. 2 in the state entering the Drake Relays behind Conner Smock of Lisbon, who is just a tick ahead of him at 1:56.84.

The 800 meter run on Friday could be one of the most intriguing prep events at Drake and one of the best for Metro runners. Jabez Walker of Linn-Mar is ranked fourth at 1:57.28 and Robert Hogg of Washngton is 10th at 1:58.01, just 1.17 seconds behind Smock.

"I think there are a handful of them that could finish anywhere from first to eighth," said Jefferson Coach Ron Tower.

Jones, slightly built at 5-foot-7 and 125 pounds, is one of those guys who could finish first. Tower thinks the key will be a good start, because he thinks getting stuck at the back of a pack could be trouble with all those good runners.

Tower is anxious to see what happens. And make no mistake, he loves to watch Jones run.

"There's no question he's got a lot of talent, but he's so smooth. He's efficient," said Tower. "If you watch him on the track, there's no wasted energy."

Tower remembers the first time he met Jones. It was two years ago, when Jones was a freshman and shooting baskets in the Jefferson gym, and it still makes him laugh. Tower sidled up to Jones and wondered if he was a runner.

"Yeah," Jones told the coach, "and I'm a good one, too."

Jones comes from a track family. Both of his parents ran track and his uncle, Anthony Hurt, was the state champion in the 400-meter dash for Davenport Central in 1994 in a swift 49.08 seconds.

Jones feels confident about his chances at Drake after performing well at the state meet last year. "I've been to state and I've competed with all those guys, and it just shows I can do it again this year," he said.

Jones likes the schedule of races on Friday. He'll run the 800 anchor leg on the sprint medley at 10:40 a.m., then have plenty of time to recover for the open 800 at 2:28 p.m. He'll finish the day in the prelims of the 4x400 relay at 8:35 p.m.

He's looking forward to running the anchor on the sprint medley and seeing how well the J-Hawks can do. He thinks it will help get him ready for the open 800 as well. "That should be a good warmup," he said.

Jones has an excellent chance of breaking an ancient school record in the 800 meter run before he graduates. Ralph Trimble set the school mark in 1959 in the old 880 yard dash, and Trimble's time converts to 1:55.4 for the metric version of the event. Jones is sitting at 1:56.9, just 1.5 seconds behind Trimble, as he chases a 53-year-old mark.

"The school record has been around for a long, long time. It goes way back," Tower noted. "It's been a long time since we've had anybody of this quality. The sky's the limit."

Tower thinks Jones could reach 1:55 this year. "I do think it's within reason," the coach said. "He's got the training behind him."

Ask Jones what his best time might be this spring and he responds in similar fashion. "Maybe 1:55. I don't know. Maybe lower than 1:55. It depends."

Tower thinks Jones might reach 1:52 or 1:53 in the 800 before he's done at Jefferson.

"I don't want to put a cap on him at all," said Tower. "He works. He had a mission coming into this season. He had a picture of what he wanted to do. And one of them was to get the school record this year."

Jones is not worried about the school record this week. The Drake Relays are on his mind, first and foremost.

"It's going to be tough," he said. "I think I can hang with them. We've worked so hard. It's going to be a good race."

He's not sure if the 800 will be a speed race or a strategic race, but he plans to be ready either way. "I think for the Drake Relays, it's going to be all or nothing."

J-Hawks 5th at Bettendorf Invy

BETTENDORF -- The Jefferson 4x800 meter relay took first place in the A Division and the J-Hawks finished fifth Friday night at the Bettendorf Invitational boys track meet.

The 4x800 team of Timauntay Jones, Devin Stone, Aaron Carter and Colton Cortez toured the track in 8 minutes, 39.22 seconds.

Three other J-Hawks claimed first place.

Tanner Lund won the 110 hurdles in the B Division, and Jason Phelps won the high jump (5-4) and Zach Berryman the discus (140-11) in the C Division.
