Nate Karlan qualifies in 2 events

Linn-Mar senior Kyle Dunn will be allowed to compete in the Class 4A state track meet next week despite being disqualified from an event at Thursday's district meet in Dubuque.

Dunn was disqualified Thursday for making an inappropriate remark after winning his heat of the 800-meter run. Dunn is not eligible to compete in the 800 at state due to the disqualification, but he can compete in all his other races.

Scott Mahmens, the activities director at Linn-Mar, said the disqualification does not affect Dunn's status for the rest of the meet, according to IHSAA rules.

Dunn, a three-time state champion during his prep career, has qualified for state in the 400 hurdles, 110 hurdles and 400-meter dash. He also can run on one of Linn-Mar's relay races.

The IHSAA released all the qualifiers for the state meet on its web site Friday night at www.iahsaa.org.

Will Griffin of Cedar Rapids Washington will be busy at the state meet in the 100, 200, 4x100 relay and 4x200 relay as the Warriors gun for their third state title in a row.

Frosh Karlan posts a pair of top 3 finishes

IOWA CITY - This has turned out to be an outstanding year for prep high jumpers in Iowa.

Now you can add Alec Clasen of Xavier to the list.

Clasen cleared 6-foot-8 in the high jump Thursday to capture top honors at the Class 4A district meet in Iowa City and automatically qualify for the state meet next week.

Clasen eclipsed his personal best by two full inches.

"I was feeling pretty good," he said. "The weather was a lot nicer than it has been in my other meets. I'm excited about it."

Cedar Rapids Washington won the district title by a comfortable margin with 133 points on a hot day, serving notice that the Warriors plan to make a serious run at their third state title in a row in Des Moines May 19-21.

Cedar Rapids Prairie and Cedar Rapids Kennedy also had impressive performances and will be well-represented at the state meet at Drake Stadium.

Clasen already owned the Xavier school record in the high jump at 6-foot-6, but he left that mark in the dust. He easily cleared 6-5, 6-6 and 6-7 on his path to 6-8.

"Yeah, I was feeling pretty good going over them," he said.

He cleared 6-foot-8 on his third and final try, but could not go any higher. "I would have liked to get 6-9 today, that's for sure," he remarked.

Tyler Donels of Southeast Polk has cleared 7-foot-2 this season, just shy of the Iowa prep record of 7-3 1/2 set by Brian Tietjens of North Central in 1981. Trey Sathoff of Pekin has jumped 6-10 1/2 this spring, Jordan Cress of Olin has gone 6-10 1/4 and Nick Day of Solon has cleared 6-9.

Clasen knows he might have to jump higher than ever at the state meet. "I'm going to have to probably P.R. to place in the top three or four," he remarked.

Will Griffin was a triple-winner for Washington in the sprints Thursday. He captured the 100 and 200 dashes and helped the Warriors win the 4x200 relay. Etienne Nzoyisaba won the 3200 for Washington to punch a ticket to state.

Matt Stocker was a double-winner in the 800 and 1600 for Prairie, nudging his twin brother Kyle in both events. Sam Joens won the discus, Tom Frieden claimed the 400 hurdles and Kyle Stocker anchored the 4x800 relay to victory for the Hawks.

Anthony Crawley had a big day for Kennedy. He won the 400 and anchored the distance medley and 4x400 relay to the victory circle.

District champions automatically qualify for the state meet. Individuals who finished second, third or fourth will qualify for state if they beat a statewide standard. The same holds true for relay teams.

Additional state qualifiers will be announced by the IHSAA on Friday.

Some of the notable Metro performers who stand a good chance of qualifying include Caleb Mere of Kennedy in the long jump, Alex Carr of Washington in the 100, and Kyle Stocker in the 800 and 1600. Washington also hopes to send its 4x100 relay.

J-Hawks boys 5th in Valley track

Kyle Stocker swept the distance events at the Mississippi Valley Conference Valley Division boys track meet at Xavier on Friday, winning the 3200 meter (9:41.49), 1600 meter (4:29.04) and 800 meter (2:01.43) races.

“Of course three gold medals is great, but we were just shooting for team points, me and my brother (Matt) just working together one-two,” Stocker said. “It doesn’t really matter who wins.”

Matt Stocker also ran well, taking second behind his brother in the 3200 meter race and finishing third in the 1600 and 800 meter races.

“For the 2 mile, we just took it out slow and then kicked at the end,” Kyle Stocker said. "That was my brother's and my strategy, so we don’t wear ourselves out. The mile, we went really slow and it was a kick race at the end, which Matt and I thought would be to our advantage. The 800 was just all out, give it your all. Tomorrow is going to be easy running anyway.”

Despite winning three races, Stocker was humble in victory, insisting that he was just trying to score as many points as possible for his team.

“It is kind of good I guess,” he said. “It is always your goal to win a race, that’s why we race. At Prairie you are expected to, nothing less.”

The Stocker brothers' finishes in the distance races helped to lead Prairie to third place with 120 points. Cedar Falls won theteam  race with 145 points and Iowa City West came in second with 127 points. Xavier was fourth with 67 points and Jefferson fifth with 51 points.

Prairie also won the discus and the 400 hurdles. Sam Joens made a throw of 157 feet, 4 inches, more than 10 feet further than second place, to take home the discus title. Tom Frieden edged out Charlie Rogers of Iowa City West, to take the 400 hurdles crown by .21 seconds with a time of 56.85
seconds.

Xavier won the 4x200 relay with Nick Ball, Eric Zeniske, Jordan Weber and Eric Hovda circling the track twice in 1:30.79, about 0.8 seconds better than their previous best time.

“After competing at Drake, we knew that we had a pretty good time but we could have done better,” Ball said. “So all week we have been working on handoffs. Getting out as quickly as we can, and just making everything as good as we possibly can. We just put it all together in that race and we had an amazing race, we all ran very well.”

The Saints also picked up a victory in the high jump where Alec Clasen won easily, jumping 6-6, half a foot higher than second place.
