Ranschau sisters win Metro Spotlight Award

Madison Ranschau and her sister Abbie are the co-winners of the Metro Spotlight Award for high school girls this week, the Metro Sports Report announced Sunday.

Madison, a senior, and Abbie, a sophomore, are two of the top athletes on the Cedar Rapids Jefferson track team that ranks among the best in the state. Both of them are off to a good start this season.

Madison Ranschau won the 55 meter hurdles at the University of Dubuque indoor meet on Friday and captured the 60 meter hurdles at the Mississippi Valley Conference indoor meet last Tuesday. She also ran on the triumphant 4x100 relay and shuttle hurdle relay at the MVC meet.

Ranschau sisters run 1-2 at Dubuque

DUBUQUE - Madison Ranschau of Cedar Rapids Jefferson won the 55 meter hurdles at the University of Dubuque Girls High School Indoor Classic Friday.

Ranschau was clocked in 8.39 seconds. Her sister, Abilene Ranschau, placed second in the same event in 8.76 seconds and Sam Kitterman of Jefferson was fourth (9.26).

Jefferson placed third in the 4x200 relay (1:49.03) and third in the 4x400 relay (4:09.94).

Ranschau, Soeken win titles at Wartburg

WAVERLY - Madison Ranschau of Jefferson and Kenzie Soeken of Prairie captured individual titles at the Wartburg indoor track meet Tuesday in Waverly.

Ranschau claimed the 55 hurdles in 8.56 seconds. Soeken won the high jump at 1.58 meters.

The Jefferson girls placed second in the 4x200 relay (1:51.16) and the 4x400 relay (4:22.39). Madison Ranschau, Abilene Ranschau, Autumn Anderson and Morgan Meese ran the 4x200 relay. Lucy Schneekloth, Meredith Koenigsfeld, Sam Kitterman and Jasmine Blue ran the 4x400 relay.

Rachel Broghammer will run at UNI

CEDAR FALLS - Cedar Rapids Jefferson graduate Rachel Broghammer, a two-time state champion with the J-Hawks, plans to join the University of Northern Iowa track team.

Broghammer ran the anchor leg when Jefferson won the Class 4A state title in the 4x200 relay this year, snapping a state record that had stood since 1975. She also helped the J-Hawks win the 4x200 relay as a sophomore in 2011.

Broghammer helped the J-Hawks finish second in the 4x100 relay, third in the sprint medley relay and fourth in the 4x400 relay at the state meet this year. Jefferson placed fifth in the team standings, its highest finish in more than 10 years.

Jeff girls smash state record in 4x200

DES MOINES - Maliya Rattliffe, Lucy Schneekloth, Jasmine Blue and Rachel "Bronco" Broghammer have been chasing the Jefferson school record in the 4x200 relay all spring.

They finally got it Friday and quite a bit more.

The Jefferson quartet shattered the all-time state record in the 4x200 when they blazed to victory in 1 minute, 40.94 seconds at the Class 4A state meet at Drake Stadium.
