Cougars escape J-Hawks in volleyball

Kennedy fought off three match points Tuesday night and defeated Jefferson, 25-20, 22-25, 25-16, 15-25, 18-16 in a Mississippi Valley Conference slugfest at the Jefferson gym.

The J-Hawks led 14-13, 15-14 and 16-15 in the fifth set and needed just one more point to claim the match, but the Cougars had an answer each time.

Kennedy tied the fifth game, 16-16, on a kill shot by 6-foot-2 sophomore Brinley Milbrath. The Cougars took a 17-16 lead on a soft dink by senior Erin Coker and won the match on a kill by Coker.

Jefferson - Volleyball

Prairie spikes J-Hawks in 4 sets

The Prairie Hawks collected 57 kills Tuesday night and clipped Jefferson, 25-22, 25-18, 20-25, 25-17, in a Mississippi Valley Conference volleyball match at Jefferson.

Rachel Butz led the kill-shot artists with 14 slams. Megan Sprengeler had 13 kills. Meghan Busswitz contributed 12 kills and three solo blocks at the net.

Halle Lueck rolled up 52 assists for Prairie (6-5) and had 14 digs. Malia Gudenkauf had 12 digs and three ace serves. Amanda Stecklein came up with 13 digs for Prairie.

Amanda Ollinger led Jefferson (7-7) with 27 kills and 19 digs. Kaylie Zitek collected 40 assists and three aces. Keke Pledge had nine digs. Kayla Jaschen contributed eight digs and three kills.

J-Hawks spike Waterloo East

WATERLOO - Jefferson waltzed past Waterloo East in three straight sets Tuesday night in MVC volleyball.

The J-Hawks won by scores of 25-14, 25-10, 25-15.

Setter Kaylie Zitek led the J-Hawks with 29 assists and five service aces. Leading the J-Hawk hitters were Amanda Ollinger with 19 kills (.452 kill efficiency), Cierra Maas with five (.333 kill efficiency), and Brenna Parke with six.

Parke led the J-Hawks with eight digs, and Keke Pledge pitched in six. Passing leader for Jefferson was Kayla Jaschen with a 2.75 average. Jaschen and Ollinger each contributed three aces.

J-Hawks win 2 matches at SE Polk

PLEASANT HILL - The Jefferson J-Hawks won a pair of matches at the Southeast Polk volleyball tournament Saturday.

The J-Hawks defeated Des Moines Roosevelt, 21-17, 21-11, in pool play and clipped Ottumwa, 25-23, 25-14, in the opening round of the playoffs.

Jefferson lost to Ankeny Centennial (21-11, 21-15), Waukee (21-19, 21-14) and Eddyville-Blakesburg (25-23, 25-19) in its other matches.

Jeff spikers fall to IC West

The Jefferson volleyball team defeated Iowa City West in their first game Tuesday night, but it went steadily downhill from there for the J-Hawks.

Iowa City West prevailed, 23-25, 25-21, 25-18, 25-6, in the Mississippi Valley Conference match at Jefferson.

Kayla Jaschen had 12 digs for Jefferson and led the team in passing efficiency. Amanda Ollinger led the J-Hawks with 22 kills, while Makenzie Tomkins had seven and Cierra Maas five.

Kaylie Zitek collected 30 assists and a team-high 15 digs. Ollinger had four blocks and Hannah Carter had three.
