Skinny Prairie Hawks give Kennedy a battle

Jacob Aune took off his jersey in the Prairie locker room Tuesday night and revealed nothing but skin and bones.

"I know I'm skinny," he said. "I've been skinny my whole life."

Skinny, but tough.

The skinny Hawks from Prairie gave the brawny fifth-ranked Cougars from Kennedy a stiff battle Tuesday night before falling short, 62-48, in a Mississippi Valley Conference game at Kennedy.

Aune, a 6-foot-2 junior, said he weighs about 138 or 140 pounds, which means he was giving away at least 75 pounds to the football players who play basketball at Kennedy.

Christian French stands 6-foot-6 and weighs 225 pounds, Kyle Lamaak is 6-foot-4 and 215, Jake Manning (who doesn't play football) is 6-foot-5 and 213 pounds. That's what Kennedy had near the basket.

Meanwhile, Prairie countered with a 138-pounder and a 5-foot-8 point guard named Jerome Frazier who showed no fear.

"Playing against guys like Christian (French) is fun," Aune insisted, "being able to go into him and see what I can do."

Aune popped in 18 points and hit two 3-pointers to help the Hawks stay within striking distance. His 3-pointer pulled Prairie within 41-38 early in the fourth quarter.

Kennedy drubs 4A state champs from 2010

The Kennedy Cougars lost to the possible Class 4A state champions Friday night when they stumbled against top-ranked Linn-Mar.

It took a while Saturday night, but the fourth-ranked Cougars bounced back with a 22-point victory over last year's state champs.

Kennedy pummeled the Ames Little Cyclones, 61-39, with a strong second half in the Kennedy gym.

Bohannon nets 25 as Lions top No. 4 Cougars

The people who told Matt Bohannon he'll never be as good as his brother Jason could be right.

He might turn out better.

Bohannon popped in 25 points Friday night as No. 1 Linn-Mar beat fourth-ranked Kennedy, 66-57, in a choppy Mississippi Valley Conference game before a near-capacity crowd at Linn-Mar.

Jason Bohannon helped Linn-Mar win the Class 4A state title in 2004 and was named Iowa's Mr. Basketball in 2006, then had a solid career at the University of Wisconsin. Matt is five years younger than Jason, but closing ground fast.

Cougars suppress Jarrod Uthoff, J-Hawks

The sixth-ranked Kennedy Cougars did to the second-ranked Jefferson J-Hawks on Friday night what Washington did last month.

They kept 6-foot-8 all-stater Jarrod Uthoff from getting the ball in the middle much of the game and then bottled him up with two or three defenders when he did get  it.

Averaging 28.8 points coming into the Mississippi Valley matchup of one-loss teams, Uthoff made four of just 10 shots taken from the field (including one three-pointer) and was held to 12 points.

Without his usual scoring, Jefferson didn’t have enough firepower to overcome the hard-nosed effort Kennedy put on in a 44-37 win.

In its only other loss this season, 49-41 at Washington on Dec. 17, Jefferson got just 17 points from its usual high-scoring center.

“That was our key coming in, to stop Uthoff,” said Cougar Coach Bob Fontana. “Christian French did a heckuva job on him all night.”

Lamaak leads Cougars past East

Kennedy Coach Bob Fontana had a feeling Tuesday night's game against Waterloo East might be one his sixth-ranked Cougars had a hard time focusing upon.  Especially with a home showdown against No. 2 Jefferson looming Friday.

“I hope we show up and play hard.  I’m concerned that this is a big game tonight and there is too much talk about the encounter on Friday involving the girl-boy doubleheader with Cedar Rapids Jefferson.  We better be ready to go,” Fontana said.

No need to worry.

Kyle Lamaak scored 25 points, Jake Manning 12 and Joe Coleman 11 to led the Cougars past East, 70-52, in a Mississippi Valley Conference game at Kennedy.
