Kennedy - Girls Cross Country

Wampole paces Cougars to title at Prairie

Kennedy senior Katie Wampole stands 5-foot, 3 1/2 inches tall (don't forget that half-inch) and weighs 105 pounds.

She used every half-inch and every pound to help the Cougars take first place in the Black Division at the Prairie Invitational cross country meet Saturday morning.

Wampole finished in third place in the individual standings as Kennedy nudged Iowa City West, 52-53, for the championship.

The Black Division consisted of six teams from the Mississippi Valley Conference along with Southeast Polk and Davenport West, so it was a significant victory for the Cougars.

"We've really improved," said Wampole, who finished behind Allison Gregg and Brianna King of Cedar Falls in 14:58.

"I'm feeling pretty tired, but it was only two seconds off my personal best ever, so I'm pretty happy," she said. "I've been working hard all summer."

Wampole said she ran 405 miles during the summer, making her a member of the "400 Mile Club" at Kennedy.

Allison Culver finished seventh for Kennedy, followed by Jenna Averhoff (10th), Lauren Meyer (11th) and Carolyn Stone (21st). Wampole was the only senior among the top-5 finishers for the Cougars, joining two juniors and two sophomores.

Shannon Gorman placed fifth for Washington. Amber Decker and Maddie Saville placed eighth and ninth for Linn-Mar, which was missing some of its top runners.

Marinna Schroud of Xavier finished seventh in the Orange Division and Sam Livinigston of Marion was 10th.

Kennedy - Girls Cross Country

Averhoff 1st team all-Metro

Linn-Mar senior Carolyn Newhouse, who helped lead the Lions to a second-place finish at last weekend's Class 4A state cross country meet, is the Metro Female Runner of the Year.

All five Linn-Mar runners that scored at the state meet were named to the first team and all seven members of the first team were unanimous selections. The team was chosen by a vote of Metro cross country coaches.

Joining Newhouse on the first team from Linn-Mar are senior Brooklynn Kascel, sophomores Morgan Uridil and Rachel Perry, and freshman Maddie Saville.

The other members of the first team are Kennedy sophomore Alyssa Averhoff and Washington sophomore Shannon Gorman.

Linn-Mar also had a runner on the second team - sophomore Caitlin Novak - and Kennedy had five runners on the second team. The Lions and Cougars were the only Metro teams to qualify for the state meet.

Linn-Mar Coach Todd Goodell and his staff are the Metro coaching staff of the year.

Cougars finish 12th at state X-C meet

FORT DODGE - Imagine running more than three miles with sore knees and a stabbing pain in your foot.

Imagine competing against the elite distance runners in the state, trying to help your team win the championship.

Now you know how Linn-Mar senior Carolyn Newhouse felt Saturday at the Class 4A state cross country meet.

Despite her painful ailments, Newhouse finished 13th in the state meet to help the Lions capture the runnerup trophy at the Lakeside Municipal Golf Course.

"Oh, gosh," Newhouse said. "It was a fight."

Dowling Catholic won the Class 4A title with 63 points. Linn-Mar finished second with 91 markers, four points ahead of Pleasant Valley.

Newhouse has been battling plantar fasciitis in her left arch, which may have contributed to soreness in both knees. Her courageous performance helped Linn-Mar have a good day.

"The girls all ran good races, a lot of P.R.'s (personal records), a great day of racing," Coach Todd Goodell said. "We feel good about what we did."

Sophomore Rachel Perry led Linn-Mar in 11th place, the first time she's led the Lions in a race all season. She's not quite sure how she did it, but was happy she did.

"It went so fast I honestly can't remember," she said. "It was a hard race."

Morgan Uridil finished 18th for the Lions, Brooklynn Kascel placed 21st and Maddie Saville ran 28th. Caitlin Novak and Olivia Miller also competed for Linn-Mar, and they all kissed the second-place trophy before heading home.

The Lions would like to come back and win the top prize some day.

"We're liking the look of things coming up," Goodell remarked. "We lose a couple of really good seniors (Newhouse and Kascel), but we've got some really nice runners coming up out of our middle school so we hope to be strong for a while."

Cedar Rapids Kennedy finished 12th in the 15-team field with 239 points. Alyssa Averhoff led the Cougars in 15th place in 14:34.

Shannon Gorman of Cedar Rapids Washington placed 22nd in 14:40.

Grace Gibbons of Dowling Catholic won the race in 14 minutes.
