Sutton takes MVC title with sizzling 59

Davis Sutton lived a golfer's dream Thursday.

Sutton fired a 4-under-par 59 at Airport National to win the Mississippi Valley Conference Super Meet and become one of the few high school golfers in course history to crack 60.

Airport National measures only 4,040 yards from the men's tees, but it's a tricky little course in southwest Cedar Rapids with some tough holes that require accurate shots.

"It was really fun," said Sutton, who led Kennedy to the team championship by 10 shots. "It's good when you enjoy your round. Once you get going, you've got a number in your head and it's fun to achieve it some of the time."

Worley on course for pro golf career

The confidence and maturity in Dane Worley’s voice belies his age. Lately, he’s demonstrated those traits on the golf course in a big way.

Worley, a 20-year-old Cedar Rapids Kennedy product, defends his Cedar Rapids City Amateur title this weekend after two straight runner-up finishes on the Iowa amateur circuit.

He finished second in both the Waterloo Open and Iowa Amateur, vaulting him to No.3 on the Iowa Golf Association Player of the Year rankings behind veteran Gene Elliott of West Des Moines and University of Iowa senior-to-be Steven Ihm.

“It’s been a really good spring and summer,’’ Worley said. “It’s kind of what I expected out of my game because I’ve spent a lot of time on it, putting the pieces together.

“What’s keeping me from winning, I think, is just making a few more putts. I didn’t lose the last two tournaments, I just got outplayed by some very good players.’’

Fundraiser for Kennedy golfer Drew Wall

Barber's Etc. is hosting a benefit Saturday (Nov. 17) at the Hiawatha Community Center to raise funds for Drew Wall and his family.

Wall is a sophomore at Kennedy and has been a member of the boys golf team for the past two years despite battling cancer. He was an inspiration for the Cougar team that finished second at this year's state meet in October. The fundraiser is to help pay his medical bills.

The day's festivities include a cut-a-thon (all proceeds from haircuts at the community center will be donated), a silent auction, pancake breakfast and luncheon. The breakfast runs from 9 to 11 a.m., lunch is from 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. and the silent auction is open from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The public is invited.
