Cougars blanked by IC West; eye 3rd place

DES MOINES - The Kennedy Cougars ended their quest for the Class 3A boys state soccer title with a possible concussion, a few ice bags and a heavy dose of frustration.

The Cougars gave top-ranked Iowa City West a stiff battle in the first half Friday but lost to the defending state champions, 2-0, in the semifinals at Cownie Park.

Kennedy (16-4) will face Johnston (19-2) in the consolation game for third place Saturday at 4:10 p.m.

It was the kiss of success.

Waterhouse scored the game-winning goal with 20 minutes, 45 seconds left in the second half as the Cougars trimmed Sioux City West, 2-1, in the opening round of the Class 3A tournament at the Cownie Soccer Park.

Walker goal sparks Cougars back to state

For much of the season, Kennedy sophomore Ryan Walker has been a playmaker.

In Saturday's Class 3A Substate 4 final against Linn-Mar, Walker took on a new role - goal scorer.

The speedy 5-foot-3 forward broke away from the Lion defense, took a long stretch pass from teammate Reid Botkin and hammered it past Lion keeper Jared Belin with 17:30 remaining for his first tally of the season.

That goal, combined with another three minutes later from Sameeullah Jung and another stellar performance from goalkeeper Nathan Althoff, gave the Cougars a 2-0 victory and their third trip to state in the past four seasons.

Wash, Kennedy advance on shootout wins

On a miserable night of marathon boys soccer at Kingston Stadium Wednesday, highly ranked Washington and Kennedy both survived scares from lesser foes to make into Saturday substate finals.

Each Class 3A semifinal game was tied 1-1 after two overtimes and decided in shootouts.

In the contest that started in drizzle at 5 p.m., fourth-ranked Washington escaped a scrappy Waterloo West bunch 5-4 on penalty kicks.

And in the nightcap that ended at 10:15 in a misty fog, fifth-ranked Kennedy squeaked by a young Dubuque Hempstead crew 4-2 in the shootout.
