Kennedy sweeps Wahlert in softball

DUBUQUE - Tianna Drahn went 4-for-4 and scored two runs Tuesday as Kennedy defeated Dubuque Wahlert, 7-1, in the first game of an MVC softball

doubleheader in Dubuque.

Andrea McEachran went 2-for-2, scored two runs and had two stolen bases as the Cougars won the second game, 14-4.

Kennedy raised its records to 6-5 overall and 5-4 in the league.

Cougars split with Waterloo West

WATERLOO - Andrea McEachran picked up the victory Thursday as the Kennedy Cougars topped Waterloo West, 5-1, in the second game of a Mississippi Valley Conference doubleheader in Waterloo.

Waterloo West claimed the first game, 6-5.

Tianna Drahn went 2-for-4 for Kennedy in the second game. Ashley Hamilton drove in two runs.

Paige Timmerman was 3-for-4 with two doubles, a home run and three RBIs for the Cougars in the opener.

Cougars top Lions in softball

Ashley Hamilton went 3-for-4 Tuesday as Kennedy trimmed Linn-Mar, 7-4, in the first game of a Mississippi Valley Conference doubleheader at Kennedy.

The second game was suspended due to rain and lightning.

Sydney Kinney went 2-for-3 with a double and two RBIs for Kennedy. Lauren Kubovec was 2-for-3 with a double and one RBI. Hamilton also had a double and RBI.

Jenna Schwartzhoff was the winning pitcher.

No. 5 Eagles sweep Central Methodist

FULTON, Mo. - The fifth-ranked Kirkwood softball team swept a doubleheader from Central Methodist Tuesday, 12-2 and 15-2, with both games lasting only five innings.

Taylor Wise, Krysta Tutsch, Tara Walls, Alicia Crivara and Jenna Schulte hit home runs in the doubleheader for the Eagles (17-4).

Wise was 2-for-3 with four RBIs in the first game. Natalie Clark was 2-for-3 with three RBIs. Chasney Jenkins scored three runs and Tutsch had two RBIs.

Crivara went 2-for-4 and drove in three runs in the second game. Walls was 4-for-4 with two doubles. Lexi Quandt went 3-for-4 and Brittney Lash was 2-for-2. Schulte drove in three runs.

Gratz named Kennedy softball coach

Former Cornell College assistant coach Dan Gratz has been hired as the new softball coach at Kennedy High School, the school announced Wednesday.

Gratz also has been an ASA softball coach in Wisconsin and served as an assistant coach for the late Gary Stamp at Mount Vernon High School.

He replaces Katie Bova, who resigned after the 2013 season.

"Coach Gratz has a tremendous enthusiasm and passion for the game of softball, both for the competitive game on the field and for the long-term lessons and leadership development of young people that the game has to offer," said Kennedy athletic director Aaron Stecker.
