Cook wins 2 events at MVC indoor

CEDAR FALLS - Famiek Cook of Cedar Rapids Kennedy captured the 200 meter dash and long jump at the Mississippi Valley Conference indoor track meet at the UNI-Dome in Cedar Falls Monday.

Cook took the 200 in 23.21 seconds and claimed the long jump at 21 feet, 3 inches.

Shawn Beyer of Kennedy won the high jump at 6 feet, 2 inches. The Cougars also claimed the shuttle hurdle relay (34.36 seconds) and captured the 4x400 relay (3:36.13).

Jacobus will join UNI track program

Derek Jacobus, a four-sport athlete at Kennedy High School, has accepted an offer to join the University of Northern Iowa track program next year.

Jacobus told The Gazette that he plans to compete in the decathlon.

Jacobus won the Class 4A long jump title at the state track meet last season. He is also a top hurdler and sprinter.

Jacobus also plays football, basketball and baseball at Kennedy.

Koelling will run for Hawkeyes

Cedar Rapids Kennedy graduate John Koelling plans to join the University of Iowa track team, he said Thursday.

Koelling placed third in the 400-meter dash and finished fourth in the 200-meter dash at the state track meet this spring. He also helped the Cougars finish second in the 4x200 relay.

Kennedy placed fourth in the Class 4A team standings.

Evans, Jones, Jacobus top all-Metro track

Josh Evans of Linn-Mar, Timauntay Jones of Jefferson and Derek Jacobus of Kennedy are three of the featured athletes on the 2013 All-Metro Boys Track Team.

Evans, Jones and Jacobus won titles at the state track meet this month. Evans claimed the 3200 meter run, Jones took the 800 meter run and Jacobus captured the long jump.

The Linn-Mar Lions won the Class 4A team championship at the state meet. The Lions also won the 4x200 relay and 1600 medley at state.

Cougars, Lions battling for 4A state title

DES MOINES - The Kennedy Cougars and Linn-Mar Lions have banged heads many times over the years for bragging rights in the Mississippi Valley Conference in a variety of sports.

Now they're banging heads for top honors at the Class 4A boys state track meet in Des Moines.

The surging Cougars got a sweet victory from Derek Jacobus in the long jump Friday and lead the 4A standings with 37 points heading into the final day on Saturday.

The talented Lions got impressive victories in the 4x200 relay and 1600 medley and stand in second place with 31 points with eight more events to be settled Saturday.
