Cougars make strong run in MVC tourney

After winning  five straight matches Saturday, the Kennedy girls finally ran out of steam and had to settle for second place to Iowa City High in the 14-team Mississippi Valley Conference volleyball tournament.

Along the way, the Cougars got revenge for regular-season losses to Iowa City West and Linn-Mar. And they beat City High in three games in pool play during the morning session.

But in the championship final the Little Hawks found their groove and posted a dominating 25-16 25-16 victory.

“I think the kids were kind of zapped at the end,” said Kennedy Coach Michelle Goodall. “And Iowa City came out on fire.”

Ranked eighth in Class 5A, City High (21-9) came into the tourney as the top seed with the only unblemished MVC record of 6-0. The Class 5A 10th-ranked Cougars (25-11) were seeded eighth based on their 4-2 conference mark.

Cougars spike Saints in volleyball

Macy Anderson collected 17 kills Tuesday night as Kennedy topped Xavier, 25-19, 20-25, 25-17, 25-21, in a Mississippi Valley Conference volleyball match at Xavier.

Gabbie Meyer, Kendal Meier and Maddy Palmer had three aces for the Cougars. Meyer was 24-for-24 on serves and Meier was 19-for-19. Meier also had 12 digs.

Anna Fluent collected 40 assists. Brinley Milbrath had 13 kills, Paige Franck nine digs and Hannah Skow five block assists.

Kennedy tops Jeff in volleyball

The Kennedy Cougars defeated the Jefferson J-Hawks, 25-23, 19-25, 25-22, 25-16, in a Mississippi Valley Conference volleyball match at Jefferson Tuesday night.

Amanda Ollinger led Jefferson with 18 kills, 15 digs and five blocks. Makenzie Tomkins had 12 kills and three blocks for the J-Hawks. Avery Guy finished with 20 assists and 10 digs.

Cougars spike Cedar Falls

CEDAR FALLS - Paige Frank led a balanced attack with 11 kills Tuesday night as Kennedy topped Cedar Falls, 25-15, 26-24, 22-25, 25-15, in a Mississippi Valley Conference volleyball match in Cedar Falls.

Frank also contributed seven digs, four blocks and two aces.

Brinley Milbrath collected 10 blocks, nine kills and four digs. Anna Fluent had 23 assists, eight kills, six digs and three blocks.

Macy Anderson pitched in with eight kills and three blocks. Kendal Meier had 16 digs, four assists, three aces and two kills.
