Cougars' upset bid falls short

DUBUQUE – The young Cinderella's spike had a sometimes sharp edge Tuesday night.

Her defense was often money, even against great odds and adversity. Her poise was perfect. Her resolve to pull the sizable upset was unshakeable.

“We really wanted it,” sophomore setter Anna Fluent said.

The only thing Cedar Rapids Kennedy didn't have was a victorious closing technique.

Cougars rally for regional win

CLINTON - Kennedy won the final two sets to win its Class 5A regional semifinal match against Clinton Thursday night.

The Cougars (20-14) advance to play Dubuque Hempstead in Tuesday's regional final at Dubuque Senior.

Kennedy dropped nailbiters in the first and third set against Clinton. The River Queens took the first set 25-22, but Kennedy claimed the second 25-20.

Clinton eked out a 25-23 win in the third set.

Kennedy won the fourth set 25-20, then grabbed the fifth set 15-11 to take the match.

Jadyn Gilson led the Cougars with 23 kills. Madi Meier had 36 digs and was 18 of 18 serving with two aces. Anna Fluent had 60 assists.

Cougars pace Metro at MVC volleyball

CEDAR FALLS – In the power-packed Mississippi Valley Conference volleyball tournament Saturday that featured way more nail-biters than blowouts, coming close was almost as good as winning.

The home team Tigers of Cedar Falls captured the crown by taming Iowa City West, 25-19 25-19, in the finals.

But five of the six Metro teams in the 14-school field won two of their three matches in pool play, and four of them advanced to the championship bracket.

Only Prairie (16-17) could be said to have had a disappointing day, losing all three morning matches and then splitting two in the consolation bracket.

Cougars swept by Iowa City West, 3-0

IOWA CITY —  The Cedar Rapids Kennedy volleyball team was swept by Iowa City West, 27-25, 25-18, 25-18, in a Mississippi Valley Conference volleyball meet in Iowa City on Tuesday night.

Paige Franck had nine kills for the Cougars. Anna Fluent finished with 27 assists and three aces.

Madi Meier collected 23 digs. Brinley Milbrath had six blocks.

Kennedy sweeps Waterloo East

Anna Fluent collected 33 assists Tuesday night as Kennedy swept Waterloo East, 25-7, 25-21, 25-12, in a Mississippi Valley Conference volleyball match at Kennedy.

Both teams celebrated DIG PINK and donations were raised to help fund the DIG PINK/Sideout foundation's breast cancer clinical trial drug.

The Cougars finished with 19 ace serves, 42 digs, 36 assists and 38 kills.
