Hynek ready for Round 2 with Kennedy matmen

Dennis Hynek took a little vacation as the head coach of the Cedar Rapids Kennedy wrestling team after the 2003 campaign.

It lasted nine years, but it's over now.

Hynek, 43, was named the head coach of the Cougars for the second time Tuesday to succeed Brent Paulson, the man who succeeded him.

Hynek stepped aside after leading Kennedy to a third-place showing at the Class 3A state meet in 2003 to spend more time with his family. Paulson was elevated from assistant coach to head coach at the time, and now Paulson has stepped aside to spend more time with his family, opening the door for Hynek to take charge again.

Hynek was Kennedy's head coach for nine years. He told the Metro Sports Report last week that he's missed the sport.

"You always miss it, especially during tournament time," he said. "I missed it, but I didn't have a whole lot of time to think about it because I was doing other things with the kids."

Hynek's son, David, is a junior at Kennedy and a member of the football program, but he's not a wrestler anymore. His stepson, Gage Farmer, is currently an eighth grader and probably will join the Kennedy wrestling team next season as a freshman.

Hynek said last week that getting a chance to coach his stepson would make the job "a little nicer."

Hynek wrestling at Cedar Rapids Prairie and at the University of Iowa for Dan Gable.
