Ailing Cougars get help from subs, win twice

DUBUQUE -- The Kennedy wrestlers like to consider themselves a single unit, with no athlete more important than another.

That was evident Thursday night. Several junior varsity wrestlers moved into the lineup in place of ailing teammates and the results were positive for the Cougars.

Kennedy defeated Iowa City High, 36-28, and dominated Dubuque Wahlert, 43-24, in Mississippi Valley Conference action at Wahlert.

The tournament featured top wrestlers from the tri-state area and nationally-ranked wrestlers at a number of weights. Three Illinois wrestlers pinned their way through the tournament.

Kennedy was led by champion Ryan Sheldon at 171 pounds. He dominated his final opponent and pinned him in 3:58. Sheldon pinned three of his opponents and earned a major decision over Prairie’s Steenblock to raise his record to 25-1.

Ryan Sheldon leads Cougars to fourth-place finish

BOONE -- Ryan Sheldon walks off the mat covered in sweat and breathing hard, but there’s little evidence that he has just dominated another opponent.

Sheldon, a senior at Cedar Rapids Kennedy who is ranked third in the state at 171 pounds, led the Cougars to a fourth-place finish at the Boone Invitational tournament on Saturday. Eight other teams competed.

In the first round, Sheldon was one of five Kennedy wrestlers who pinned his opponent.
