Cougars cop title at Fort Madison

FORT MADISON — The forecast was clear and cold, but it was a green and gold blizzard that moved through the Fort Madison Invitational wrestling tournament Dec. 18  when the Kennedy Cougars stepped on the mat.

Kennedy crowned three champions to win the 11-team tournament, downing host Fort Madison, 198.5-184. Washington finished sixth with 93 points. Marion was 10th with 45.

Frosh Waterhouse sets fastest pin record

Freshman Nathan Waterhouse set a school record with a 7-second pin at 103 pounds that helped propel Kennedy past Cedar Falls, 37-31, Thursday night (Dec. 16) in a Mississippi Valley Conference meet at Kennedy.

Waterhouse said he didn’t think he would wrestle in the meet.

“I thought I had a forfeit,” he said. “It felt good that I won. It sorta surprised me.”

Kennedy wrestlers looking to move up

Kennedy was not happy when it tied for 38th at the Class 3A state wrestling tournament last year. Not happy at all.

“Of course we’re disappointed with that,” Coach Brent Paulson said. “It’s not that long ago that we were getting third place, top 15, top 20.”

The Cougars finished third at the state tournament in 2004 and were 13th in 2005. They placed 22nd in 2006 and 2007, but slipped to 52nd, 39th and 38th the last three seasons.
