Klostermann stars as Lions bop Hawks

The Linn-Mar Lions put on the "Beau & Bo" show Friday night, and it was bye-bye Prairie.

Beau Klostermann pumped in a career-high 26 points and Jordan Bohannon notched 23 after a slow start as the Lions knocked off the Prairie Hawks, 81-63, in an entertaining Mississippi Valley Conference game at the Prairie gym.

Bohannon did not score in the first 15 minutes of the game and had two personal fouls at that point, but he got hot after that and finished with five 3-pointers and slick drives to the hoop.

The Lions are accustomed to getting big nights from Bohannon, who leads Class 4A in scoring, but Klostermann more than doubled his pre-game norm of 11.7 points per outing. Klosterman pumped in four 3-pointers in the first half and had 18 points at intermission, helping the Lions take a 47-38 lead.

Klostermann, a 6-foot-4 senior, added eight more points in the second half. He's technically the starting center for the smallish Lions, but he's a versatile player who can score from all spots.

"That was a big game for him," Linn-Mar coach Chris Robertson said. "He was really in the groove and really shot it well. He's a tough match-up."

Bohannon breaks Metro 3-point record

Could it be that the last of the Bohannon boys is the best of the bunch?

Linn-Mar senior Jordan Bohannon, the youngest of the four basketball brothers, scored the Lions’ game-ending nine straight points Tuesday night to preserve an 82-76 win over Xavier in a barn-burner of a battle in the Saints' gym.

He tallied 13 of his game-high 33 points (11 for 19 from the field) in the fourth quarter as the short-handed but gritty Saints made a mad-dash pull of a late comeback.

After Xavier sophomore Jackson Joens nailed a 3-pointer with 36 seconds left to bring his team within two points, Bohannon calmly shut the door by swishing four free throws in a row.

"Obviously, Jordan is the guy we wanted to have the ball in his hands,” Linn-Mar coach Chris Robertson said. “The difference in the game was free throws down the stretch. He made some key shots.”

Besides six straight charity shots in the last minute, the sharp-shooting point guard also canned a 3-pointer with 2:20 left to out put the Lions ahead by seven. It was his third trey of the night and the 231st of his four-year career, breaking the Metro mark of 230 held by his older brother Jason.

"It was a fun game all around,” said Bohannon, whose baby face belies a killer instinct. “Very competitive. Coach (Ryan) Luehrsmann always gets his guys ready to play.”

Bohannon jumps to 5th in Metro scoring

Jordan Bohannon poured in 26 points and climbed to No. 5 in Metro career scoring Saturday as the Linn-Mar Lions topped Dubuque Hempstead, 64-58, in a Mississippi Valley Conference makeup game at Linn-Mar.

Bohannon has scored 1,386 points in his four-year career at Linn-Mar. He jumped ahead of Ryan Luehrsmann, who scored 1,375 points at Washington from 1993-96, and ahead of Jim Heck, who had 1,378 points at Washington from 1968-70.

Bohannon can catch Adam Spanich, who had 1,491 points for Regis from 1992-95, and Mark Enright, who scored 1,528 points for Kennedy from 1970-73, and move all the way into the No.3 spot all-time in the Metro.

There won't be enough games for Bohannon to catch his brother Jason Bohannon, who scored 1,679 points at Linn-Mar from 2004-06, or to catch all-time leader Marcus Paige, who had 1,701 points at Linn-Mar from 2009-12.

Bohannon made four 3-pointers Saturday, giving him 228 in his career. Jason Bohannon is the all-time Metro leader with 230, which means the family record probably will fall this coming week.

Riley Murphy and Beau Klostermann scored 10 points apiece Saturday as the Lions raised their records to 11-5 overall and 9-3 in the conference.

Ryan McDonough scored 17 points for Hempstead (7-10, 3-9).

J-Hawks upset No. 6 Lions, 71-70

After coming close so many times this season, the Jefferson boys basketball team simply found a way Friday night.

Valentino Green grabbed a rebound off a missed Dennis McKinney free throw and banked it home just before the final horn to give the J-Hawks a stunning 71-70 Mississippi Valley Conference win over No. 6 Linn-Mar at the Jefferson gym.

Green's winning basket set off a wild celebration as players and fans mobbed the 6-foot-2 senior while the Lions stood near their bench in stunned silence.

"We didn't have a play on," Green said. "We wanted to make the shot, but I knew if he missed it I was going to get the rebound. I battled for it and I knew I had to go up strong.

"This win shows just how hard we've been working," he continued. "Since Christmas break, we've been getting a lot better and it showed tonight."

Jefferson coach Brandon Horman just stood back and watched the celebration unfold. The J-Hawks dropped a 3-point decision on Tuesday at Dubuque Wahlert and refused to back down against the highly-regarded Lions.
