Lions survive McDermott and Saints

Adam McDermott tried to steal the show Tuesday night for the Xavier Saints, but the stubborn Linn-Mar Lions wouldn't let him get away with it.

McDermott poured in 21 points in the second half during a furious comeback that chopped a 23-point deficit all the way down to just six points, but Linn-Mar made its free throws at the end and escaped Ron Thillen Gymnasium with a 66-57 victory.

McDermott scored only two points in a lackluster first half and the Saints trailed at intermission, 36-15, with their leading scorer under wraps. The Xavier coaches did not think the 6-foot-4 forward was being aggressive enough.

"Adam and I exchanged some words at halftime and that was the tone of the conversation, that he needed to step up and be more aggressive, " said Linn-Mar Coach Ryan Luehrsmann. "And he certainly responded."

Tichy will join Viterbo basketball

Linn-Mar senior Jason Tichy has accepted an offer to join the basketball program at Viterbo University next season.

Tichy has modest averages of 2.6 points and 2.5 rebounds for Linn-Mar, but he's a valuable reserve as an athletic 6-foot-5 forward for the eighth-ranked Lions.

Tichy had nine points against Washington this season, five rebounds against Southeast Polk and three blocked shots against Prairie.

Tichy is the second Linn-Mar senior to make a college commitment. Lane Halupnik has committed to Coe.

Viterbo is an NAIA school in La Crosse, Wis.
