Linn-Mar Girls Cross Country

Linn-Mar - Girls Cross Country

Jenks leads Linn-Mar girls to Valley title

DUBUQUE - Freshman Stephanie Jenks ran a torrid pace to claim first place and guided Linn-Mar to the Mississippi Valley Conference Valley Division girls cross country title Thursday at the Dubuque Soccer Complex.

The Lions placed six runners in the top 10 and whipped second place Cedar Falls, 26-51.

Jenks ran a 4-kilometer time of 13 minutes, 21 seconds that beat second place Allison Gregg by 40 seconds.

Amber Decker finished fourth, Rachel Perry sixth, Maddie Saville seventh, Morgan Garcia eighth and Sydney Johnston 10th for the Lions.

Xavier was fourth, Prairie fifth and Washington seventh.

Shannon Gorman of Washington finished third. Jenny Dickes was Xavier's top finisher in 11th place and Maddie Rainey finished 12th to lead Prairie.

Linn-Mar also won the boys championship, despite running without standout junior Josh Evans.

The Lions edged Cedar Falls by two points, 54-56.

The Lions placed five runners in the top 15. Cedar Falls had four runners in the top 11, but the Tigers' fifth runner came in 24th.

Washington was third, Prairie fourth and Xavier seventh.

Chase Grabau and Tanner Rathje came in sixth and seventh, respectively, to lead Linn-Mar.

Prairie's Mitch Pritts won the 5-kilometer race in 15 minutes, 36 seconds. Washington's Joe Berry and Etienne Nzoyisaba finished third and fourth, respectively.

Xavier's top finisher was Luke Koechner in 26th.

Linn-Mar - Girls Cross Country

Running holds disability at bay for Linn-Mar soph

Linn-Mar cross country runner Annie Stevenson runs her own race. Always has – ever since she came bounding into Cindy and Kelly Stevenson's life on an airplane from Korea 15 years ago.

Someone had failed to notify the Stevensons that the final adoption papers had been approved so they could get ready for her arrival. “One day I got a call at work saying she was on the plane and on the way to Des Moines,” recalls her mother.

Kelly Stevenson was out of town – in pre-cell-phone days – so Cindy scrambled to track him down and get him pointed toward Des Moines in time for the arrival of their four-month-old daughter.

The Stevensons had adopted a son, James, three years earlier. “We wanted to have a family and there were babies that needed a family, and to me, that’s all there is to it,” says Cindy.
Five months later, their close family was rocked by the news that their beautiful baby girl had been diagnosed with cerebral palsy.

“It was one of those moments when the world stopped turning,” Cindy says. But as they took the news in stride and moved forward, they found reason to be thankful.

Overcoming obstacles

Cerebral palsy is a spectrum of disorders caused by disrupted communication between the brain and muscles, affecting the ability to move and maintain balance. The disease ranges widely in severity, in some cases causing intellectual as well as physical disabilities. But it was clear from the outset that Annie’s limitations were physical, not intellectual.

“She was our baby and we knew she was bright and was going to be fine,” Cindy says. “It affects the right side of her body and her mouth. She has working vocal cords and her brain knows words, but her mouth muscles don’t cooperate. It’s as if she has a mouth full of marbles.”

Unable to speak, Annie began learning sign language as a toddler. “We learned it together,” says Cindy, who quickly “reads” and gives voice to Annie’s flashing left hand.

In grade school, an educational assistant accompanied Annie to her classes and interpreted for her. “But now I don’t need one because I can get around by myself, talking in different ways,” she explains, speaking through Cindy.

“A lot of my friends know the sign alphabet really well, so I can sign with my friends. And I can use an iPhone app or I can write it down.” Like most teenagers, she can create a text message at lightning speed and send or show it to someone.

Battling the disease’s impact on her limbs was more daunting. At age five, as her small legs turned inward, she underwent the first of multiple surgeries to cut and straighten the bones in both legs, place and remove plates and pins, and lengthen her muscles.

“Cutting the femur and tibia, those were the big ones,” says Cindy. “They also operated on her salivary glands so she could swallow her saliva.” Her most recent surgery – they hope her last – was in 2011.

It has not been a road for the timid, but the Stevensons have never focused on the drawbacks of Annie’s CP. “We don’t think of her as disabled or handicapped,” Cindy says.

“I never use those words,” adds Annie. But she will always need to stretch and use her muscles as much as possible to keep her body from stiffening and her legs from turning inward again.

‘I just run’

At a recent cross country meet, Annie jogged her way around the 4K course with a steady but halting gait. A few minutes after the rest of the junior varsity girls completed the race, she crossed the finish line with a relieved smile. Her time – 36 minutes and change.

The 10th grader has been running cross country and track since eighth grade, although severe allergies prevented her from finishing the track season last year.

“My parents were always telling me I should run, but I wanted to do cross country rather than run on my own. It’s more fun.” Even though she literally runs her own race, she relishes the camaraderie of being part of the cross country team.

“I love my team,” she says. “They are really fun to be around and they are really supportive.” The point is not to compete, she emphasizes. “I just run. I am slower and they can go farther, but I run as much as I can.”

On practice days, Linn-Mar cross country coach Todd Goodell works with her to plan a route that she can complete, providing a ride back to school if needed.

“She does a great job in terms of doing as much as she can in practice,” Goodell says. “We adapt so she’s part of our practice. She’ll show up in the weight room even though most of the stuff she can’t do. She’ll simulate what we’re trying to do as best she can.”

Annie typically runs two to three miles, but has gone as far as four. “I run by myself, but if someone is hurt they walk with me.”

Like her teammates, she’s working to get faster. “They don’t always time me because they have to start the next race,” she says, “but one time the assistant coach timed me and she said she thought that was my best time – about 36 minutes. People said I am getting better and I look stronger.

“When I’m in a race, I just want to be done,” she laughs, echoing the mantra of cross country runners everywhere. “I don’t really care about my time, but when I go faster it feels good. I always want to be faster and do more at practice.”

It’s not unusual for other girls to run with her at the end of a race to give her support – even runners from other teams, Cindy says.

“I’ve never had anyone make me feel like I didn’t belong,” adds Annie.

On the contrary, her coach says, “she’s definitely an inspiration. When kids cheer her on and see her in races, it’s uplifting. She has good friends on the team, gets along well with everybody and always has a smile on her face.”

She's also an outstanding student and unfailingly gracious, he notes. “She’s a joy to have around, and we’re fortunate to have her.”

Unlimited horizons

Along with maintaining a 4.0 GPA, Annie takes dance lessons and has been involved with Theatre Cedar Rapids since she was a fourth grader. “I’ve been in five productions,” she says proudly.

She’s on the Linn-Mar Student Council and is a Student Ambassador and a member of Future Business Leaders of America, with a growing interest in business and accounting.

Although only a sophomore, she already has dreams of leaving Iowa for college.

“She’s probably the most motivated person I know,” says her mother. “If she wants to do something she will find a way to do it. She’s not somebody who will accept somebody telling her she can’t do something.”

On or off the cross country course, she’ll keep running her own race.

Linn-Mar - Girls Cross Country

Amazing Jenks runs away with MVC title

CEDAR FALLS - Stephanie Jenks likes to take naps, but she does it quickly.

That figures, because the Linn-Mar High School freshman is incredibly fast at just about everthing she does.

Jenks continued to make a shambles of the high school cross country season Thursday by running away with top honors at the Mississippi Valley Conference meet at Birdsall Park in Cedar Falls.

Jenks helped the Lions win the team championship with 65 points in a tight battle with Iowa City High (75), Kennedy (77) and Iowa City West (79).

Jenks won the 4-kilometer race in 14 minutes, 10 seconds. That gave her a 10-second victory over Allison Gregg of Cedar Falls, who finished third in the state meet last year.

Jenks has been ranked No. 1 in the state for several weeks and has posted four impressive victories. She won the Cedar Rapids Invitational by 16 seconds, captured the Heartland Classic in Ames by 14 seconds, blew away the field at the Charger Classic Invitational in Aurora, Ill., by 43 seconds and now has an MVC title to her credit.

The young phenom has shown she has the talent to become a four-time state champion during her high school career, but Linn-Mar Coach Todd Goodell shied away from that idea Thursday.

"You can't look at it that way. You have to take care of business right now," he said. "Obviously she's shown she has the potential for that, but a lot of things can happen over the years."

Her performances have been extremely impressive this season, but it's even more remarkable when you consider that she's also training and competing with the Linn-Mar swimming team this fall. That makes for some very long days.

"I wake up at 4:45 in the morning and I have swim practice at 5:30," she said. "After that I'll come home and eat a quick breakfast and I'll go straight to school. And from school I'll go straight to cross country practice."

Her day is not done at that point, however, because the swim team practices at night as well.

"I'll go home for an hour or 45 minutes or whatever after cross country practice," she said. "Then I'll go back to school, get on the bus and go down to Coe until 10 o'clock for swim practice. And then I'll go home, snack really quick and then I'll go to bed."

And don't worry about her school work. She's doing quite well in that department, too.

"I'm doing pretty well right now," she said. "I have all A's in my classes. I'm really excited about that.

"I try to get my homework done as quick as I can. High school has really taught me to be efficient with my time and not to waste much."

Jenks is accustomed to a hectic schedule. She's one of the top female triathletes in her age group in the nation and won a national title in the 13-15 age group in Ohio this summer, capping a series of triathlons around the country.

That's where the naps came in.

"I do take a lot of naps now through the summer," she confessed. "My parents were starting to get a little worried that with the naps I was taking that I'd start falling asleep at school."

Her mother, Deb, is her personal coach and an assistant cross country coach with the Lions.

The triathlon in her age group has consisted of a 375-meter swim, a 10-kilometer bike race and a 1 1/2-mile run. Next year, the distances will double when she begins to compete in the 16-to-19 age group so she'll have a 750-meter swim, a 20K bike race and a 5K run.

"I'm really looking forward to that," she said eagerly.

Jenks has successfully juggled cross country and swimming this fall, picking her spots and competing in as many big events as possible in both sports. She'll face a conflict on Saturday, Oct. 27 when the state cross country meet and regional swimming meet will be held on the same day.

She'll run in the state meet in Fort Dodge (assuming she qualifies in two weeks), then try to make the swimming meet that afternoon, if possible.

Jenks dominated the competition Thursday in Cedar Falls. She quickly grabbed a 30-yard lead and stretched the gap to 70 or 80 yards after the first mile, which she covered in a swift 5:22. She maintained her big lead the rest of the race and was never challenged.

"She's just a beast," said Goodell.

She's won her four races this season by 83 seconds, a whopping total in cross country.

"I never dreamed I could dominate," she said. "I never thought I'd be doing as well as I'm doing right now.

"I just go out and I do the best I can. I try my best every day. If there's ever some pain, I'll just suck it up and I'll just go with it."

Goodell said Jenks is an incredibly hard worker. And humble, too.

"She's already great," he said, "and she's trying to get better."

Amber Decker finished fourth for Linn-Mar to help the Lions claim the MVC title. Rachel Perry was 12th, Maddie Saville 18th and Sydney Johnston 30th.

The Kennedy Cougars had won all six of their races this season and made a bid for No. 7, but their string was finally broken. They placed three runners in the top 10 with Alyssa Averhoff fifth, Allison Culver eighth and Katie Wampole ninth.

Shannon Gorman of Washington placed sixth.

Linn-Mar junior Josh Evans skipped Thursday's event while he continues to nurse leg and hip ailments. He hopes to compete again in the district meet in two weeks and qualify for state.

Evans fell from No. 1 to No. 4 in the individual Class 4A rankings this week due to his absence from competition.

Mitch Pritts of Prairie finished third in the boys race. Tanner Rathje of Linn-Mar placed sixth and Joe Berry of Washington was 10th. Etienne Nzoyisaba of Washington matched Berry's time of 16:10 but was given 11th place.

Iowa City West nipped Iowa City High for the boys title, 84-86.

Linn-Mar - Girls Cross Country

Jenks wins Illinois race by 43 seconds

AURORA, Ill. - Linn-Mar freshman Stephanie Jenks won the Charger Classic Invitational cross country meet by nearly 43 seconds Saturday at Oakhurst Park in Aurora, Ill.

Jenks is ranked No. 1 in Class 4A in Iowa, and after Saturday's performance she undoubtedly would rank extremely high in Illinois as well.

Jenks covered the course in 16 minutes, 17.9 seconds to run away with the individual title. Skyler Bollinger of Yorkville, Ill., placed a distant second in 17:00.4.

The Linn-Mar girls finished second out of 24 teams in the meet. Amber Decker placed seventh, Rachel Perry 10th, Maddie Saville 16th and Morgan Uridil 54th.

The Linn-Mar boys finished third out of 29 teams in their race. Linn-Mar junior Josh Evans, who is ranked No. 1 in Iowa, did not run Saturday due to tightness in his right leg, but the Lions made a strong showing without him.

Chase Grabau led Linn-Mar in 14th place. Tanner Rathje finished 16th, Kyle Read 31st, Jay Halverson 32nd and Michael Mather 47th.

Linn-Mar - Girls Cross Country

Stephanie Jenks runs quickly to top of Metro

The Stephanie Jenks era in Metro cross country began with a bang Thursday at the Cedar Rapids Invitational.

Jenks, a freshman at Linn-Mar who is a nationally ranked triathlete, beat a strong field of older runners in the first varsity cross country race of her career.

Jenks covered the 4-kilometer course in 14 minutes, 26.71 seconds for a 16-second victory over Ashlynn Yokum of Iowa City West.

Jenks missed the first few meets of the season due to her national schedule of events, but she made up for lost time Thursday. She's also competing for the Linn-Mar swimming team this season and is one of the top swimmers on the club.

The Kennedy girls continued their string of impressive outings this season by winning the team championship with 54 points, nipping Linn-Mar by five markers.

The Cougars placed four runners in the top-11 with Alyssa Averhoff (5th), Allison Culver (7th), Lauren Meyer (10th) and Katie Wampole (11th) leading the way.

Shannon Gorman of Washington finished in third place and Maddie Saville of Linn-Mar was sixth.

Josh Evans of Linn-Mar showed no signs of slowing down Thursday and captured the boys' 5K race in 15 minutes, 32.89 seconds, beating Isaac Jensen of Iowa City West by 26 seconds.

Evans led the Lions to the team championship with 50 points. Iowa City West finished second.

Linn-Mar placed four runners in the top-11 with Evans (1st), Tanner Rathje (6th), Chase Grabau (9th) and Daniel Murphy (11th).

Etienne Nzoyisaba of Washington finished in fourth place. Mitch Pritts of Prairie was fifth.
