Gorman wins title at Linn-Mar race

Shannon Gorman of Cedar Rapids Washington won the 4,000-meter run at the Linn-Mar Cross Country Invitational Saturday morning.

Gorman covered the course at the Oak Ridge Middle School in Marion in 14 minutes, 39.53 seconds in the Junior/Senior division. Jefferson senior Michelle Zikes finished second in the division at 15:20.63.

Two of the best times Saturday were submitted by Linn-Mar runners in the Freshman/Sophomore race. Maddie Saville crossed the finish line in 14:58.44 and Amber Decker was clocked in 15:02.77, which would have put them second and third among the upperclassmen.

Linn-Mar won the team title in the Junior/Senior division with 27 points, followed by Washington, Xavier and Jefferson.

Linn-Mar - Girls Cross Country

Jenks sisters among nation's elite

Deb and Mike Jenks are raising their two daughters to pursue their passions, no matter what.

Turns out, what the Linn-Mar middle school sisters like to do best is run.

Run really, really far, in fact, and really fast, too.

Typical young girls in all other respects, 14-year-old Stephanie and 12-year-old Jennifer proved two weeks ago at a meet in South Dakota to be among the very best youth cross country competitors in the Midwest.

Before that, both claimed Class 4A state championships in cross country for their grade level.

And last August at the USA triathlon championships in San Diego, each of them claimed the national title for her age group.

“They’re fantastic athletes, both of them,” says Kyle Hoffman, a Linn-Mar track coach who handles cross country team duties for Oak Ridge and Excelsior Middle Schools. “They’re so natural at it that there’s not a whole lot I can do for them.

“And they’re both at the top of the list among the elite middle school runners in the whole country.”

They also simply fell into the laps of the coaches in the Lions track program, since home for them is the family farm an hour away outside Oelwein in Buchanan county.

Both have open-enrolled at Linn-Mar schools for the past three years, but sports was only a small part of it.

“Mike and I have always tried to give the girls every opportunity in whatever they’ve chosen to do,” says Deb, a Coe College graduate who worked as a certified public accountant before her daughters were born.  “Both Steph and Jen have always been straight A students. But we didn’t think they were getting the educational opportunities we wanted for them. So we started looking around at other districts.”

They began to commute daily to Linn-Mar when Stephanie was in sixth grade at Oak Ridge and Jennifer a fifth grader at Westfield.

A year ago, the girls and their mom moved into a townhouse near the Linn-Mar campus where they live during the week through the school year. The farmstead near Aurora, according to Stephanie, is “home, sweet, home” and the place in Marion is “home away from home.”

Living close to school, their folks feel, gives the girls time with friends and the chance to take part more activities.

“They’re just kids,” says Deb. “And kids still have to be kids.”

The fact that they’re also elite athletes at a tender age was not by design.

Their mom says they were encouraged (but not forced) to try anything that interested them from an early age, from reading to T-ball softball to soccer.

Both fell in love with tae-kwon-do when little and earned brown belts.

Stephanie was the first to take up running when, on a whim, she decided to enter an age-group triathlon in the Quad Cities five years ago.

Although Deb held track records at Fort Madison High School and still runs for recreation, she says it wasn’t her idea.

“I just thought it would be fun,” her older daughter says. “I thought it would be a new thing to try.”

Stephanie did surprisingly well in the grueling swim, bike and running event.

She was hooked, and her sister soon joined her.

They’ve been training and competing ever since, and for the past two summers have gone over the country during the summer to top-flight triathlon meets.

All along, Deb has been their coach. And last she year she became a nationally certified coach for the sport.

“The girls were going to a much higher level,” she says. “And I thought I needed more information on how to help them train.”

Deb is also organizing a local club (Mach II Multi Sports) to develop other youngsters interested in triathlon competition.  So far, her daughters are the only members.

But their success speaks for itself.

Two years ago, Stephanie finished eighth as a triathlete in the nationals and won the 13-15 division this past summer.  Jennifer claimed the 11-12 division title in San Diego.

While both took state middle school cross country honors this fall, it was their performance in the Heartland Regional Cross Country Championships in Sioux Falls earlier this month that really raised eyebrows.

Competing unattached in the short-course competition, Jennifer easily won her division and finished second among all females.  Against the top 221 mostly high school runners from six states, Stephanie came in second and qualified for the Nike national meet Dec. 3 in Portland, Ore.

As an eighth grader, she finished a full minute ahead of Linn-Mar senior Carolyn Newhouse, who had led her team to a second place in the state cross country meet.

“We didn’t know how good she was going to be,” Linn-Mar Head Coach Todd Goodell said afterward.  “She proved it today.”

To talk to the girls, however, you wouldn’t know they excel somewhat out of the limelight on the national stage. They’re as normal as can be.

“I’m the social one, with tons of friends,” says Stephanie. “And I talk a lot.

“Jen, she’s the shy one. But she’s really, really smart. School comes easy for her.”

Their parents are proud of both and not just because they win medals.

“They’re just normal kids with a lot of different interests,” says Deb. “They want to do their best in everything, and we want to do everything we can to open doors for them.”

Linn-Mar 8th grader stars at regional race

Stephanie Jenks is just 14 years old and an eighth grader at Oak Ridge Middle School in Marion, but she thought it might be fun to race against high school girls at the Heartland Regional Cross Country Championships Sunday in Sioux Falls, S.D.

She did incredibly well.

Jenks finished second in the girls high school division and earned a free trip to the Nike Cross Nationals that will be held in Portland, Ore., on Saturday, Dec. 3.

Jenks ran the 5-kilometer race in 18 minutes, 16.49 seconds - a pace of 5:53 per mile. Maria Hauger, a high school junior from Minnesota, won the race in 17:52.67.

"It was quite a shocker," Jenks said of her performance. "Going into it, my major strategy was to hang with the lead pack as long as I possibly could. I did pretty well."

A total of 221 girls competed in the event, which included runners from six states. There was a sprinkling of other eighth graders, but most of the girls were high school students.

Jenks finished a full minute ahead of Linn-Mar senior Carolyn Newhouse, who finished in 19:16.95 compared to 18:16.49 for Jenks. Newhouse helped Linn-Mar finish second at the Class 4A state cross country meet this month, was the top runner for the Lions most of the season and was selected by coaches at the Metro Athlete of the Year.

Jenks handily defeated other members of the Linn-Mar varsity as well. Next year, Jenks will be a freshman at Linn-Mar High School and undoubtedly will rank as the top runner on the club.

"We didn't know how good she was going to be," said Linn-Mar Coach Todd Goodell, who attended the race. "She proved it today."

Linn-Mar entered several members of its team in the regional meet, but Jenks ran unattached since she did not compete for the Lions this season.

Jenks is not just an outstanding young runner. She's also one of the top triathletes in her age group in the country and ranks No. 1 in the 13-to-15 youth elite division. She competes in triathlons that feature a 375-yard swim, a 10-kilometer bicycle race and a 2.5-kilometer run.

Jenks said she likes running the best. "Running is my favorite thing to do," she remarked.

She said she's looking forward to competing in the national meet, which is sponsored by Nike. "I'm really excited," she said. "I think it's going to be a lot of fun. I'm really looking forward to it."

Linn-Mar sophomore Josh Evans competed at the regional meet Sunday, but struggled in his race and finished 49th. Evans placed second at the Class 4A state meet last month.

Carolyn Newhouse Metro's top female runner

Linn-Mar senior Carolyn Newhouse, who helped lead the Lions to a second-place finish at last weekend's Class 4A state cross country meet, is the Metro Female Runner of the Year.

All five Linn-Mar runners that scored at the state meet were named to the first team and all seven members of the first team were unanimous selections. The team was chosen by a vote of Metro cross country coaches.

Joining Newhouse on the first team from Linn-Mar are senior Brooklynn Kascel, sophomores Morgan Uridil and Rachel Perry, and freshman Maddie Saville.

The other members of the first team are Kennedy sophomore Alyssa Averhoff and Washington sophomore Shannon Gorman.

Linn-Mar also had a runner on the second team - sophomore Caitlin Novak - and Kennedy had five runners on the second team. The Lions and Cougars were the only Metro teams to qualify for the state meet.

Newhouse fights pain, helps Lions take 2nd

FORT DODGE - Imagine running more than three miles with sore knees and a stabbing pain in your foot.

Imagine competing against the elite distance runners in the state, trying to help your team win the championship.

Now you know how Linn-Mar senior Carolyn Newhouse felt Saturday at the Class 4A state cross country meet.

Despite her painful ailments, Newhouse finished 13th in the state meet to help the Lions capture the runnerup trophy at the Lakeside Municipal Golf Course.

"Oh, gosh," Newhouse said. "It was a fight."

Dowling Catholic won the Class 4A title with 63 points. Linn-Mar finished second with 91 markers, four points ahead of Pleasant Valley.

Newhouse has been battling plantar fasciitis in her left arch, which may have contributed to soreness in both knees. Her courageous performance helped Linn-Mar have a good day.

"The girls all ran good races, a lot of P.R.'s (personal records), a great day of racing," Coach Todd Goodell said. "We feel good about what we did."

Sophomore Rachel Perry led Linn-Mar in 11th place, the first time she's led the Lions in a race all season. She's not quite sure how she did it, but was happy she did.

"It went so fast I honestly can't remember," she said. "It was a hard race."

Morgan Uridil finished 18th for the Lions, Brooklynn Kascel placed 21st and Maddie Saville ran 28th. Caitlin Novak and Olivia Miller also competed for Linn-Mar, and they all kissed the second-place trophy before heading home.

The Lions would like to come back and win the top prize some day.

"We're liking the look of things coming up," Goodell remarked. "We lose a couple of really good seniors (Newhouse and Kascel), but we've got some really nice runners coming up out of our middle school so we hope to be strong for a while."

Cedar Rapids Kennedy finished 12th in the 15-team field with 239 points. Alyssa Averhoff led the Cougars in 15th place in 14:34.

Shannon Gorman of Cedar Rapids Washington placed 22nd in 14:40.

Grace Gibbons of Dowling Catholic won the race in 14 minutes.
