Linn-Mar Girls Cross Country

Linn-Mar - Girls Cross Country

Linn-Mar girls race to 4A district title

MARSHALLTOWN - The Linn-Mar High School girls cross country team flexed its muscles at the Class 4A district meet at Marshalltown Community College Thursday afternoon.

The Lions placed five runners in the top-11 and won the team championship with 33 points on a chilly, windy day.

Carolyn Newhouse led Linn-Mar in third place in 15 minutes, 17 seconds as the Lions qualified for the state meet in Fort Dodge on Oct. 29. Rachel Perry placed fourth, Morgan Uridil sixth, Maddie Saville ninth and Brooklyn Kascel 11th.

Molly Leveille and Pombie Silverman finished 1-2 for Iowa City West. Leveille won the race in 15 minutes, 10 seconds. Silverman was second in 15:15, with Newhouse third.

"It wasn't what I wanted," Newhouse said. "I've been dealing with some injuries, so hopefully I can be healthy by next week. I'd like to be in that top tier of girls."

Newhouse is ranked third in the state cross country rankings, while Leveille is ranked 13th and Silverman is 23rd.

Linn-Mar is ranked second in the state team rankings behind Dowling Catholic. The Lions run in a pack and will be chasing Dowling for the team championship in Fort Dodge.

"We want to catch Dowling, but of course that's a big goal to have," Newhouse said.

Caitlin Novak finished 12th for Linn-Mar but was not needed in the team standings. Novak would have been the No. 1 finisher for seven of the teams that competed Thursday, but she was only the sixth-best runner for the Lions.

Iowa City West finished second in the team standings with 45 points and Johnston was third with 53. The top-3 teams and the top-10 individuals qualified for the state meet.

Prairie finished fourth with 132 points. Bree Gaster led the Hawks in 19th place.

Linn-Mar - Girls Cross Country

Linn-Mar girls capture 1st MVC crown

The Linn-Mar High School girls cross country team is No. 2 in the state and No. 1 in the Mississippi Valley Conference.

The Lions captured their first MVC Super Meet title in school history Thursday with a strong performance at Noelridge Park by placing five girls in the top 11.

Linn-Mar finished 4-5-7-8-11 with Brooklyn Kascel, Carolyn Newhouse, Rachel Perry, Morgan Uridil and Maddie Saville tightly bunched within 21 seconds.

Newhouse has been Linn-Mar's top runner all season, but Kascel nudged her by three seconds with a strong finish.

"I honestly didn't think I could beat Carolyn," Kascel said. "But we just feed off each other the whole race, and if I run with her it makes me go faster."

The den of Lions finished with 35 points for a comfortable 16-point margin over Cedar Falls. Iowa City High was third.

"Awesome," Kascel said. "We worked so hard to get to this place."

Cedar Falls runners finished 1-2 with Allison Gregg and Brianna King at the top, but the Tigers didn't have the depth to match the Lions. The next three Cedar Falls runners were 13-17-18.

Linn-Mar is ranked No. 2 in the state in the latest Class 4A poll, trailing Dowling Catholic. The Lions have been ranked high all season, but shot all the way to No. 2 this week.

"We were really surprised, because last year we weren't that high up," Kascel said. "And this year we're working really hard and it's really paid off."

Linn-Mar Coach Todd Goodell thought his team had a chance to win the MVC title, but the Valley has other strong teams with third-ranked Iowa City High, No. 8 Iowa City West, No. 10 Cedar Falls and No. 11 Cedar Rapids Kennedy.

"I thought they performed well. It's the way we were hoping they would perform," said Goodell, in his 14th year as the girls and boys cross country coach at Linn-Mar.

"Brooklyn Kascel popped off a good one today. They ran well as a pack again. We have a couple more big ones to go."

The Mississippi Division meet will be held in Dubuque Oct. 13, followed by the regional meet Oct. 20 and the state meet Oct. 29.

Dowling Catholic beat Linn-Mar at the Heartland Classic Sept. 17, but the Lions appear to be getting stronger. They hope to challenge for the state title in Fort Dodge in three weeks.

"I think we have a chance if we keep working hard and just trust in each other," Kascel said.

"We're hoping we can make it interesting," Goodell said.

Kennedy finished fifth in the MVC team standings. Washington was eighth, Prairie ninth, Xavier 11th and Jefferson 13th.

Shannon Gorman of Washington placed 10th. Bree Gaster of Prairie was 15th.

Linn-Mar - Girls Cross Country

Newhouse wins, Lions dominate Linn-Mar Invitational

Linn-Mar sophomore Josh Evans is not merely the top cross country runner in the Mississippi Valley Conference anymore.

He's now one of the best runners in the state and has been ranked No. 1 by the Iowa Track Coaches Association the past two weeks.

Evans showed why Tuesday when he won the Linn-Mar Invitational at the Tuma Soccer Complex by 29 seconds.

Evans vaulted to the No. 1 spot in the state rankings after a strong second-place showing Sept. 17 at the Heartland Classic in Ames, where he beat runners who had been ranked 1-2 in Iowa.

Evans climbed from No. 3 to No. 1 in last week's rankings based on that strong performance in Ames and stayed No. 1 in this week's poll. He's just a sophomore and still only 15 years old, yet he's already considered the top distance runner in Iowa.

"It's pretty cool to see that," he said Tuesday after winning the Linn-Mar Invitational in 15 minutes, 34 seconds over the flat 5-kilometer course. "It will be fun the next couple of years."

Cole Decker of Dowling Catholic had been ranked No. 1 in the state, but Evans beat him by 16 seconds at the Heartland Classic.

"I was pretty amazed," Evans said. "I'm figuring he probably had some kind of an off-day. I did not see that coming. I figured he'd be right with me.

"I was really nervous," he said. "I was thinking he was going to run away with it. I kept waiting for him to make a move. He's going to be right with me at state, I know that much."

The state meet is scheduled for Oct. 29 in Fort Dodge.

Ben Anderson of West Des Moines Valley was ranked No. 2 in the state prior to the Heartland Classic, but Evans beat him by eight seconds. Anderson stayed No. 2 in the rankings and Decker fell to No. 3.

Evans finished second in the Heartland Classic, finishing behind a runner from Minnesota. It became a battle for second place among Evans, Decker, Anderson and a few others.

"It was a lot of fun," Evans said. "It was a great course. We had a good battle going between me and Cole and Ben Anderson for 2 1/2 miles.

"I just pulled away around one turn and the guy from Minnesota caught me, but it was really a lot of fun. It was a great course to run on."

Evans has won all of his races this fall against Iowans, mostly by wide margins.

"At the start of the season I didn't see this coming," he said. "But now I'm just thinking I need to be with the front group and I just go from there."

He's looking forward to competing for a state title next month and possibly winning the race.

"I hope so," he said. "I'm definitely looking to contend for that, for sure."

There were only five schools in the Linn-Mar Invitational Tuesday, and all the guests ended up chasing Linn-Mar.

The Lions won the boys title with 37 points, trimming Prairie (45) and Washington (52). Jacob Aune of Prairie finished second and Robert Hogg of Washington was third.

Carolyn Newhouse led the Linn-Mar girls to their title by winning her 4-kilometer race in 14 minutes, 56 seconds. She beat teammate Rachel Perry by 22 seconds. The Lions finished 1-2-3-4-6 to run away with the team title.
