Gorman excels as member of 'Team Jenks'

WATERL00 - Pound for pound, inch for inch, year for year, Reagan Gorman of Cedar Rapids Washington is the best distance runner in the Mississippi Valley Conference and perhaps the best in the state.

The petite freshman finished a resounding second at the Mississippi Valley Conference Super Meet on Thursday at Byrnes Park in Waterloo by a scant six seconds behind Iowa City High junior Mary Arch.

Gorman, who measures 5-foot-2 and about 85 pounds, might have caught Arch if the 5K race had been a little longer. She was getting closer and closer as the race wound around the Irv Warren Golf Course.

It's hard to believe a 14-year-old girl who is that small could have so much strength and energy, but Gorman has been running since was about 7 years old and excels in triathlons, a grueling event that combines running, swimming and biking.

Gorman trains for the triathlon with "Team Jenks," a group of outstanding young athletes that features Linn-Mar senior Stephanie Jenks and is operated by the Jenks family. Gorman placed 31st at the national triathlon meet in Westchester, Ohio, this August in the youth elite 13-to-15 age group and is the second-highest ranked triathlete in the state in her division.

VanDraska leads Prairie to title

Tysen VanDraska was sorely disappointed when he finished seventh at the Class 4A state cross country meet last fall.

"I kind of choked a little bit," he claimed Thursday.

He does not plan to let it happen again.

VanDraska captured top honors and led Cedar Rapids Prairie to the team championship Thursday at the annual Cedar Rapids Invitational at Noelridge Park.

VanDraska won the 5K outing in 16 minutes, 7.68 seconds, edging Brandon Cooley of Bettendorf by 1.5 seconds in a tight race throughout. Prairie ran away with the team championship with 31 points with Jake Moore finishing fourth, Chris Oehlert sixth and Cam Steffens seventh.

VanDraska may have been a little harsh on himself by claiming he "choked a little bit" at the state meet, but he's always set high standards for himself as a distance runner.

Jenks featured in Running Times

Stephanie Jenks is a cover girl.

The distance star from Linn-Mar High School is featured in the new edition of Running Times, a magazine devoted to running and everything that goes with it.

Jenks is pictured on the cover of the magazine and is the subject of a two-page article, complete with four more pictures and her training log for a typical week.

The title of the article is "A Balanced Approach," and explains how Jenks used the triathlon to help further her running career. Jenks won the silver medal in the triathlon at the Junior Olympics in China last summer, but she's put the triathlon aside to focus on running.

Jenks runs 15th at national meet

SAN DIEGO - Linn-Mar junior Stephanie Jenks finished 15th at the Foot Locker Cross Country High School National Championship at Balboa Park in San Diego Saturday.

Anna Rohrer, a senior from Mishawaka, Ind., captured her second title in three years in 17 minutes, 13 seconds.

Jenks was timed in 18:08.

Jenks won an Iowa state cross country title as a freshman in 2012, but she has not competed for the Linn-Mar cross country team the past two years. She competes with the Linn-Mar swim team in the fall instead.
