Lions in 7th after 1st day of state golf

ADEL -- Kimmy Askelson is in sixth place in the medalist race after Tuesday's first round of the Class 4A girls state golf tournament at Rvier Valley Golf Club.

Askelson, a Xavier senior, is nine shots behind leader Beth Wagner of Ankeny. Askelson shot a 12-over par 84.

Cedar Falls leads the team race by 14 strokes over Pleasant Valley. All four Tigers golfers are in the top 11 in individual play.

Linn-Mar is in seventh place, 71 shots behind Cedar Falls. Xavier is in eighth place, two shots behind Linn-Mar.

Linn-Mar's top score was turned in by Rachel Thrune, who shot a 95.

Linn-Mar - Girls Golf

Linn-Mar girls qualify for state golf

Linn-Mar had four players break the century mark at Monday's Class 4A regional girls golf meet at Jones Park, but it was Sarah Tegtmeier's 100 that lifted the Lions to the state meet.

Linn-Mar and Ottumwa tied for second place with scores of 366. Qualifying criteria then goes to the fifth golfer on each team. Tegtmeier's 100 was 17 strokes better than Ottumwa's golfer.

Cedar Falls ran away with the team title with a 323. All four Tigers finished among the top five individuals and qualified for state medal play.

Jefferson junior Megan Furnish shot an 86 and finished tied for sixth, one stroke out of qualifying for a state berth.

Emma Lorenz led Linn-Mar with an 89.

Jefferson (410) finished eighth, Prairie (430) 10th and Kennedy (441) 11th.

The Class 4A state golf meet if May 31-June 1 at Adel.

Linn-Mar - Girls Golf

Linn-Mar wins J-Hawk triangular

Rachel Thrune shot a 46, Dianna Jensen a 47 and Emma Lorenz a 49 and Linn-Mar cruised to victory Thursday at the Jefferson triangular girls golf meet at Jones Park.

Julie Pople had a 51 for Linn-Mar. The Lions won with 193 total. Waverly-Shell Rock was second at 222 and Jefferson had 239.

Jefferson's top player, Megan Furnish, did not play. She injured her back Tuesday.

The regional golf tournaments are Monday.

Linn-Mar - Girls Golf

Toy's 76 lead Lions to 3rd at Prairie Invite

Kimmy Askelson shot an even-par 65 to claim medalist honors at the Prairie Invitational girls golf meet Thursday at Airport National.

Askelson had three bogeys and a double bogey, but countered that with five birdies. She beat Newton's Jasmine Yoder by seven strokes.

Xavier was second to Newton in the team race, finishing 13 shots back.  Linn-Mar tied with Clear Creek Amana for third place, four shots behind Xavier.

Danielle Toy's 76 led Linn-Mar.

Prairie finished ninth.

Lions 2nd at Mississippi Division girls golf meet

DUBUQUE -- Dionna Jensen's 92 Monday led Linn-Mar to a second-place finish in the Mississippi Valley Conference Mississippi Division girls golf tournament at The Meadows.

Dubuque Wahlert won the tournament with a 362 that matched its total from a week ago at the the MVC Super Meet at Coralville's Brown Deer Golf Course. The total from each tournament was added together to decide the overall division champion. The Golden Eagles' 724 total was 47 shots better than second-place Linn-Mar.

Wahlert's Amy Ihm was medalist and Mississippi Division Athlete of the Year. She shot a 76 Monday and 155 overall that was 28 strokes better than teammate Lauren Gonner. Jensen was fifth, Rachel Thrune eighth and Emma Lorenz tied for ninth.

Kennedy finished sixth and Washington seventh.
