Lions upend No.3 Hempstead for state berth

DUBUQUE - The Linn-Mar girls soccer team got revenge against Dubuque Hempstead in the Class 3A regional finals Monday night and earned a trip to the state tournament with a 2-1 victory.

Linn-Mar will play an opening-round match at the 3A state tournament Thursday at Cownie Park in Des Moines.

Hempstead blanked Linn-Mar, 1-0, during the regular season at Linn-Mar, but the seventh-ranked Lions collected their biggest victory of the season Monday by trimming the third-ranked Mustangs in Dubuque.

Jensen Sevening gave Linn-Mar a 1-0 lead, but Alesha Duccini tied the score for Hempstead.

Allie Noggle scored the game-winning goal for the Lions with assists from Sevening and Olivia Garcia.

Linn-Mar will take a 15-4 record to the state tournament. Hempstead finished with a 15-4 mark.

Garcia, Waterman pace No.7 Lions

Olivia Garcia and Karyle Waterman fired in two goals Wednesday night as No. 7 Linn-Mar rolled by Dubuque Senior, 8-0, in the semifinals of the Class 3A regional soccer tournament at Linn-Mar Stadium.

The Lions (14-4) will face third-ranked Dubuque Hempstead on Monday at 6 p.m. at Dalzell Field in Dubuque in the regional finals, with the winner advancing to the state tournament.

Kayla Kvach, Maddie Saville, Jensen Sevening and Allie Strottman also scored for Linn-Mar. Sevening collected two assists.

Garcia, Amanda Heiderscheit and Claire Larson also had assists.

Linn-Mar led at halftime, 5-0.

Linn-Mar girls boot Bettendorf

Olivia Garcia, Jaclyn Simons and Annika Menges scored goals Friday as the Linn-Mar Lions defeated Bettendorf, 4-1, in a non-conference soccer match at Linn-Mar Stadium.

Linn-Mar's fourth score was the result of an "own goal" by Bettendorf.

Claire Larson collected two assists for the Lions and Jensen Sevening had one.

WEST DES MOINES - The Linn-Mar girls soccer team knocked off No. 4 West Des Moines Valley, 2-1, at the Valley tournament Saturday in West Des Moines.

Olivia Garcia and Amanda Heiderscheit scored goals for the Lions. Jensen Sevening collected an assist.

WEST DES MOINES - Olivia Garcia scored two goals Friday as Linn-Mar rallied to trim No. 5 Waukee, 2-1, at the West Des Moines Valley girls soccer tournament.

The Lions trailed, 1-0, at halftime.

Claire Larson collected an assist for Linn-Mar.
