Linn-Mar boys fall in substate tennis final

Linn-Mar was beaten by Iowa City West, 5-1, Saturday in the Class 2A team tennis substate finalat Cedar Rapids Washington.

Linn-Mar reached the finals by drubbling Cedar Falls, 5-0. Iowa City West whipped Marshalltown, 5-0.

Iowa City West advances to the state team tournament, May 31, at Des Moines.

Linn-Mar closed out its season at 15-3.

Gavin Young was Linn-Mar's winner in the Iowa City West meet. Brady Anderson, Tyler McCann, Blake Young, Dillon Einck and Scott Kleymann won in the Cedar Falls meet.

Lions throttle Warriors in boys tennis substate

Linn-Mar rattled off five straight wins in singles and blanked Washington, 5-0, Saturday in a Class 2A substate boys tennis meet at Coe.

Linn-Mar clinched the win with five match wins and that ended the meet. The Lions (14-2) advance to the substate semifinals May 21 against Cedar Falls at Washington. That match is at 9 a.m. The substate finals are scheduled for 2 p.m. against either Marshalltown or Iowa City West. Marshalltown beat Waterloo West, 5-1, Saturday to adavance.

"We came out ready to play today.  Nobody wanted their season to end today and it showed," Linn-Mar Coach Cris Wundram said. "Cedar Falls will be a tough match for us next weekend but we're all excited to move on and we'll start getting ready for Cedar Falls come Monday."

Washington ended its season at 12-3. The Warriors played without Charlie Hammond and Mitch Blades, who were disqualified for unsportsmanlike conduct during doubles play at Thursday's district meet. Hammond and Blades were the Warriors' top two singles players and top doubles team during the season.

Linn-Mar boys win Mississippi Division tennis title

IOWA CITY -- Linn-Mar overwhelmed Iowa City High, 8-1, Tuesday to capture the Mississippi Valley Conference Mississippi Division boys tennis title.

Linn-Mar finished the regular season with a record of 13-2, 12-1 in the MVC

"One of our goals this season was to win a conference title, and we accomplished that tonight," Linn-Mar Coach Chris Wundram said. "Hopefully we can build on this going into districts on Thursday."

Lions break Warriors in boys tennis

Linn-Mar won four of six singles matches and one doubles match and beat Washington, 5-4, in a boys tennis meet at Linn-Mar.

Four of the six singles matches went to tiebreaker sets. Linn-Mar won three. The Lions also won their only doubles match in a tiebreaker.
