Warriors click on Senior Night

In a hit-and-miss year, the Washington volleyball team has always had the parts for a peak performance.

At last, on Senior Night in their home gym Tuesday, the Warriors put all the pieces together and closed out the regular season with a decisive three-set thumping of Linn-Mar.

By winning 25-21, 25-20, 25-19, they overcame a couple of bugaboos that have plagued them all year: When they grabbed a lead, they didn't let go. And when they fell behind, they rallied back.

“We've been so close in so many games,” said senior co-captain Dani Franklin. “We've been right there.

“Tonight, we were finally able to get over the hill. We stayed calm and just kept pushing.”

Noisy Lions push Dike-New Hartford

According to the Linn-Mar volleyball players, the louder they are the better they play.

“It's an energy thing,” said senior Kristie Sommer. “It seems like when we're talking more to each other more, we're a lot livelier.”

And on Saturday at Cedar Rapids Jefferson's Westside Volleyball Invitational, they were talking up a blue streak.

Seeded No.11 out of 21 teams in the field, the Lions advanced to a semifinals match with top seeded Dike-New Hartford.

Geary gets farewell gift from Prairie

Several of Kevin Geary’s former players were in the bleachers for Cedar Rapids Prairie’s home match Tuesday night against Linn-Mar.

After nearly 30 years at the helm of the Hawks’ program, Geary has announced his retirement at the end of the season. The group of former players honored their coach following the match.

Geary’s final Prairie team made it a night to remember for the returning alums.

The Hawks (13-9, 2-3) were convincing winners in the first two games, but fell behind 20-10 to the Lions in Game 3. Prairie roared back to score 15 of the final 17 points in the match to complete a 25-20, 25-16, 25-22 victory.

Linn-Mar - Volleyball

Linn-Mar spikers sweep Wahlert

Kiley Coppock collected 31 digs Tuesday night and Aryn Jones had 12 kills as Linn-Mar swept Dubuque Wahlert, 25-15, 25-22, 25-16, in a Mississippi Valley Conference volleyball match at Linn-Mar.

Sami Boekhoff and Kristie Sommer contributed eight kills apiece for the Lions. Sarah Renner had 19 assists and Ellie Anderson had 16.

Lions finish 2-2 at Monticello

MONTICELLO - The Linn-Mar Lions compiled a 2-2 record at the Monticello volleyball tournament Saturday.

The Lions posted victories over Monticello (21-14, 21-9) and Bellevue Marquette (25-13, 25-16).

Linn-Mar's losses were to DeWitt Central (21-19, 12-21, 19-17) and Davenport Assumption (21-15, 15-21, 15-9).
