Lions trip Kennedy, 39-24

The new format of double-dual meets in the Mississippi Valley Conference this season produced an exciting night of wrestling at Kennedy High School Thursday.

Linn-Mar and Kennedy both defeated Waterloo West, setting up a showdown between the Lions and Cougars for supremacy. Linn-Mar beat Kennedy in the finale, 39-24.

The Cougars began the meet against Linn-Mar with wins by Logan Kubovec at 145 pounds and Shane Williams at 152. With senior Jordan Baskerville injured and Kennedy forfeiting at 215, the Cougars knew they needed to gain control early.

The Lions bounced back, though. At 160 pounds, Linn-Mar’s Andrew Holladay and Kennedy’s Matt Adams kept it close until the end. Holladay won, 13-8, and the Lions were on the board.

Kennedy's Ryan Sheldon, ranked third in the state, earned a technical fall at 171 and the Cougars led by eight points, 11-3.

Linn-Mar forged ahead, 15-11, with Mark Atwater pinning Zach Deitrich at 189 pounds in 3:18, followed by Kennedy's forfeit at 215. The Lions wouldn’t look back after that.

Linn-Mar’s Jeffrey stays unbeaten

Winning as a prep freshman in Iowa is not an easy task, but Linn-Mar 103 pounder Alijah Jeffrey seems to know the way.

Jeffery held Waverly’s Andrew Steiert scoreless and used a third period escape to secure the upset and keep intact his unblemished 10-0 record on Dec. 11 at the 5 Seasons Duals.

“I felt I was going to win before I stepped on the mat; that’s the mindset I always try to take,” Jeffrey said.

Lions roar at West Delaware Invitational

MANCHESTER — In Iowa, when a coach’s varsity roster lists four freshmen, it’s likely he’s in one of those “rebuilding years” and the phrase “Hey, nice effort kid – we’ll get ‘em next year,” is commonly heard in the post-match pow-wow.

This was definitely not the case for Linn-Mar wrestling coach Doug Streicher and the Lions on Dec. 4  as his young team took home the championship trophy at the Hawk Invitational in Manchester by outscoring New Hampton’s Indians by 22.5 points.
