Lions nab 2 titles at Clinton

CLINTON – The Linn-Mar wrestling team won a pair of individual titles and scored 117.5 points for sixth place Saturday at the Bob Lueders Invitational.

Washington scored nine points for 19th place.

Matt Wempen improved to 15-0 with a 12-2 major decision over Sean Gohlke of Milton for the 145-pound title for the Lions. Shea Hartzler (29-1) won the 160 title with an 11-1 major decision over Davenport Assumption’s Joe Argo.

Wenger helps Prairie pin Linn-Mar

Josh Wenger has enjoyed an extraordinary week with the Cedar Rapids Prairie wrestling team.

It began this past Saturday, when Wenger broke the school record for victories and helped the Hawks capture the Geneseo Invitational in Illinois.

On Monday, he visited Grand View University in Des Moines and accepted an offer to wrestle for the three-time defending NAIA champions next year as a freshman in college.

On Thursday night, he collected a technical fall to help the fourth-ranked Hawks flatten No. 16 Linn-Mar, 52-22, in a Mississippi Valley Conference meet in the Linn-Mar gym.

Linn-Mar wrestlers win ELC Duals

ESTHERVILLE – The Linn-Mar wrestling team won five dual meets to capture the team title at the Estherville-Lincoln Central Duals on Saturday.

The Lions beat Estherville-Lincoln Central 54-22, Sioux City Heelan 67-22, Blue Earth Area 35-31, Spirit Lake Park 67-10 and Forest City 57-21.

Matt Wempen had four first-period pins at 145 to lead Linn-Mar.

Shea Hartzler had four pins at 160. Alex Streicher won four matches, including two by fall, at 132.

Toby Northrup collected three pins at 152. Joe Gallo had a pin and two decisions at 195. Tylor Newhouse had three wins at 220 and 285.

Lions split MVC dual meets

DUBUQUE - The Linn-Mar Lions came home from Dubuque Thursday night with a split of their Mississippi Valley Conference dual meets.

The Lions trounced Dubuque Senior, 70-6, but were trimmed by Dubuque Wahlert, 35-32.

CJ Garnett (120) and Matt Wempen (145) collected two pins for Linn-Mar. Alex Streicher (132), Toby Northrup (152), Shea Hartzler (160) and Manny Jeffery (170) also won both of their matches.

Northrup had a technical fall and a pin.
