Wempen storms back for Linn-Mar matmen

Linn-Mar senior Matt Wempen knows the clock is ticking on his high school wrestling career.

He won a state title as a freshman in 2012, but he suffered a tough 3-2 loss in the finals in 2013 and had to settle for fifth place last year when he wrestled at the state meet with a broken thumb.

He broke his left thumb again in practice this season and had to sit - impatiently - and watch the first six weeks of the season before returning with a flourish at the 49th Annual Linn-Mar Invitational Saturday.

Wempen collected four quick pins at 145 pounds in 3:15, 1:25, 1:12 and 28 seconds. He also received a forfeit, giving him a 5-0 record after just 6 minutes, 20 seconds of wrestling.

Baker helps J-Hawks slay ranked foes

IOWA CITY - Brenden Baker needs to give up gymnastics as a hobby and stick with wrestling.

It's a lot safer.

Baker broke four toes on his left foot trying to do a flip at the gymnastics academy where he works and was sidelined for three months, but he returned to the wrestling mat in fine form Thursday night to help the third-ranked Jefferson J-Hawks beat two ranked teams in a double-dual meet in Iowa City.

Baker, ranked No. 2 at 113 pounds, collected two pins in his first action of the season as Jefferson defeated seventh-ranked Linn-Mar, 45-17, and topped fifth-ranked Iowa City West, 44-27, in the Mississippi Valley Conference affairs.

It was the second straight year that the vastly improved J-Hawks have defeated the two traditional MVC powers.
