3 Metro teams make wrestling poll

Jefferson, Prairie and Linn-Mar have been ranked in the top 10 of the initial Class 3A wrestling poll for the 2014-15 campaign.

The J-Hawks are ranked No. 3, Prairie is ranked No. 4 and Linn-Mar is ranked No. 7.

Southeast Polk is ranked No. 1 in Class 3A, followed by Bettendorf.

Jefferson has seven ranked wrestlers with Brenden Baker No. 2 at 113 pounds, Luke Sedlacek No. 3 at 160, Kyle Briggs No. 4 at 132, Dalton Kuehl No. 5 at 285, Kelly May No. 6 at 182, Tavian Rashed No. 7 at 152 and Joseph Sibomana No. 10 at 120.

Prairie features six ranked wrestlers with Marcus England No. 2 at 106 pounds, Josh Wenger No. 2 at 138, Sam Uthoff No. 3 at 126, Jarod Cadena No. 8 at 182, Jonah Manson No. 8 at 220 and Taylor Mehman No. 9 at 195.

Linn-Mar has five ranked grapplers with Shea Hartzler No. 2 at 160, Matt Wempen No. 3 at 145, Noah Ajram No. 5 at 120, Sam Nowak No. 6 at 220 and Toby Northrup No. 8 at 152.

The Xavier Saints have three ranked wrestlers with Clint Lembeck No. 2 at 132, Josh Gerke No. 6 at 126 and Jeff Vipond No. 9 at 106.

Kennedy has two ranked wrestlers with Nolan Hromidko No. 3 at 120 and Logen Rodriguez No. 5 at 145.

Linn-Mar wrestlers fall to Hempstead

The seventh-ranked Linn-Mar wrestling team dropped its season opener to Dubuque Hempstead Thursday night, 39-25, in a Mississippi Valley Conference dual meet at Linn-Mar.

Johnny Clymer (138) and Shea Hartzler (160) had pins for the Lions.

Borschel picked for IHSAA Hall of Fame

Former Linn-Mar wrestling star Jay Borschel will be inducted into the Iowa High School Athletic Association Hall of Fame on Saturday, Feb. 21 at the state wrestling tournament in Des Moines.

Borschel is a member of an exclusive Hall of Fame class that features four wrestlers who were four-time state champs.

Mack Reiter of Gilbertville Don Bosco, C.J. Ettelson of Hudson, Daniel LeClerc of North Linn and Borschel were all four-time champs.

Former Davenport Assumption wrestling Coach Wade King also will be inducted into the IHSAA Hall of Fame. King spent two years as the wrestling coach at Cedar Rapids Washington and is still the football coach/athletic director at Assumption.

Borschel finished his prep career with 163-1 record from 2002 through 2005. He won state titles at 103 pounds, 125, 152 and 171.

Borschel was an NCAA champion at 174 pounds for the Iowa Hawkeyes in 2010. He is currently an assistant coach at Northwestern University.

Lembeck will wrestle for Hawkeyes

Linn-Mar senior Ross Lembeck has decided to continue his wrestling career at the University of Iowa, his father Chris Lembeck said Thursday.

Lembeck was a four-time place-winner at the Class 3A state tournament. He finished 2nd, 3rd, 5th and 7th for the Lions, including a third-place showing at 152 pounds this year.

Lembeck was ranked No.1 this year, but he missed a month of the season with a knee injury and hurt his shoulder at the state tournament. He also suffered from a knee injury last year as a junior.

Jeffery tops All-Metro wrestling team

Linn-Mar state champion Alijah Jeffery has been named the Athlete of the Year on the 2014 All-Metro wrestling team, selected by the Metro wrestling coaches.

Jeffery won the 120-pound title at the state meet last week. He was the only state champion from the Metro area this year.

Blake Williams of Prairie was named the Coach of the Year on the All-Metro team.
